exchange is Microsoft's mail services package. I don't know if MS will still support Exchange 5.3 and it may be worth it to have a consultant do a migration to 2000 or 2003. I know support for 5.5 ends in dec anyways. active directory is a different software package from exchange and ,even though the two are generally very much tied together, they perform different roles.

There is no Exchange 5.3.

On the job is not the place to learn Exchange. Nothing pisses users off than their email not working. Dead email is a very common RGE (resume generating event). I highly recommend you hit up the local Barnes and Noble and see if there are any Exchange 5.5 books left. If not, you might check Amazon or something online.

Until you learn how to administer the system, hiring a consultant may be a very good idea.

actually there was an exchange 5.3... it was in short release as a patch upgrade from 5.0 and before 5.5. 5.0 and 5.5 are considered full exchange platoforms, while 5.3 was a series of patches.
