The good news is that win 9 is only ~1 year away... the bad news is win 9 might be as big of a turkey as win 8.

While I'm skeptical because 8 is a bigger pile than Vista was, at least Vista begat 7, so hopefully something great can come of 9.

This is bad news:(
Eh, not really. It's not as big of a deal as it would seem at first. You'll still be able to buy Windows 7 for years to come, and OEM (System Builder) sales aren't stopping for another year (at least).

Direct sales from MS site ended some time ago. But I'm sure you'll still be able to buy it for at least another 3-4 years. It would be suicidal for MS to stop 7 now when enterprise adoption of 8 is still pretty much nil.

If I do a search for business desktops on Dell's site for new business desktops example, even when we know MS is pushing them to push 8, I find 140 models with Windows 7, but only 34 with Windows 8

Once the news hit some of the major sites, Microsoft changed the wording in the chart to read "To be determined", instead of ending retail sales of Win 7 on Oct. 30th.

I saw it before it was changed.

My work computer has had Windows XP pro ever since it came out with no upgrades until now. New work computer has Windows 7 on it and that is good enough for awhile considering the tasks involved with the work computer.

Now a personal home computer is a whole other story compared to work.

I saw the same rumor on Gizmodo, but I took the news with an entire canister of salt. We'll see.

Kind of depressing, the thought of ending sales of the best Windows OS ever made. Here's to hoping there is a choice during installation of 9 to tailor for the desktop/notebook.

win 8.1 for the win!!!

"8.2" may bring back a windows 7 style start menu...

http://winsupersite.com/windows-8/further-changes-coming-windows-threshold

've not heard anything independently about the product versions in Threshold. But I do know about a few changes that Microsoft is planning for what my sources have described as "the next version of Windows," which I assume is Threshold. (Though to be clear, they never used this name.) And they're big news.

They are...
Metro apps running in windows on the desktop. As you can today with third-party utilities such as ModernMix, the next version of Windows will let users optionally run Metro apps in floating windows on the desktop.

Start menu. After bringing back the Start button in Windows 8.1, Microsoft will take the next logical step in the next Windows version and make the Start menu available as an option. It's possible this will appear only on those product versions that support the desktop.
