Microsoft Digial Sound System 80 in Win2k

Has anyone tried a Microsoft Digital Sound System 80 in Windows 2000? I have to run it through USB because the volume controls don't work (all of them make it louder...That's a problem). I can't install the software that is on the CD, but that's really not a problem since Windows just sets it up. However, some sounds like, skip. IE Windows system beeps, but MP3's play. Wierd ... Any ideas?

USB speakers use a LOT of processor resources, especially on older systems. What are you system specs?
