Story

"The decision to remove Microsoft's Java implementation was made because of Sun's strategy of using the legal system to compete with Microsoft," Microsoft spokesman Jim Cullinan said in a statement.

Because they've violated antitrust laws to maintain and exploit their monopoly so yes, they should be required to support it at this point, and I'll bet somewhere somehow, this policy will change and they will support it.

Nice spin by Cullinan. MS tried to embrace/extend/pollute Java (tm) and thus was sued by Sun. They settled out of court, whereby MS gave up its Java license.

Whether MS continues to ship its ancient Java 1.1.5 VM is a nonstarter, except for a few clueless IE users who'll wonder where Java applet support went. Java on the server side is already much more important than applets have been or ever will be. Server-side Java is also arguably currently more popular than comparable MS technologies, but that market will shift towards .Net over time.

I am suprised M$ has continued to use Sun's VM this long. I thought for sure they would have hacked together their own VM by now. I guess I was wrong.

*shrug* I guess you can't expect much from a company that has never even once created an original software package, save for Microsoft Bob, and I think they'd prefer to forget about that. ;)

if they ever do change this policy, it won't be because they were forced to by law.

First they sued us for not putting it in,
Then they sued us for changing it so it can work properly in windows
Then they sued us to take it out.
Then they sued us to put it back in with no changes so windows developers cant use windows features.
then they sued us for 1 billion dollars

Sun is a stupid crybaby.

Especially since they're not an actual Monopoly but rather getting punished for being successful, innovative, and come to the aid of a needy industry.

She looks like she fell off the Ugly Tree and hit every branch on the way down.
She got caught in an explosion in the Ugly Factory.
She nearly drowned in the Ugly Pool.
She got beaten by the Ugly Stick.

In my exeprience, browser-side Java applets were an utter joke.

It's most certainly not MS's fault that they've all but dissappeared.

It's just Micro$oft acting like Micro$oft, the Borg of software. They think they're so dominant they don't have to give a damn about contractual and licencing agreements. They see their signature on an written document as just so much fluff when they see a greater advantage in playing the bully. :|

We are Micro$oft. Resisitance is futile. You will be assimilated! :|
