True. If we are talking dollars and cents, then the Wii decimated the field in spite of being graphically inferior to both the PS3 and 360. The Wii also brought a ton of new casual gamers into the community that simply wouldn't have existed otherwise. The 360 dominated the PS3 over much of its early life, but in the end it became pretty much a tie.

With Nintendo fumbling so hard with the Wii U, the field is ripe. The performance potential between the PS4 and XB1 is so similar that this next gen is going to be defined almost completely by software. Exclusives by third party developers are going to become even more rare because they want to maximize revenue, which minimizes the differences between the consoles even further.

I bet ultimately gamers will choose their next console based on whether they want God of War and Gran Turismo or Gears of War and Forza. I'm generalizing here.

Yeah but I would not be at all surprised if the highly rated Nintendo franchises again bring their system up front. Especially if it is $200 cheaper than the competition. They made mistakes early but the right software can make all the difference.

I just hope there is a good stream of quality titles after the ps4 release. Hate to play a couple OK games and then 6months of nothing worth buying.

This is really how it has always been for consoles. You either wanted to play Mario or Sonic, Mario or Final Fantasy, Mario or Master Chief or Kronos. Realistically, I think now it just comes down to which console is bought first, rather than which console in general.

You may be right but I'm skeptical. It takes time and money to develop a game console. The Wii U is based on the Wii which was based on the Gamecube. If the Wii U was new architecture experiencing growing pains I would understand, but tech wise the Wii U was already out of date at release, and Nintendo was hoping to gimic its way to success with the fancy controller and rehashes of Wii titles.

If Nintendo can't turn things around for the Wii U in a serious way, I predict we'll either see an announcement for a new console sooner rather than later or future Mario and Zelda titles announced for the PS4 and XB1 for release in 2014 or 2015. I think they will continue to do well in the handheld market, but for the console side they are heading down the same path as Sega.

Maybe Nintendo can pull themselves out of the danger, but it remains to be seen. They had a honeymoon with the Wii, but now they are going to have to actually put some effort in.

I am confident in their software teams. That's about all I can say
