Further to a recent post stating that MS were considering purchasing Claria (the bastards behind the Gator software), they have now reportedly bought/acquired it. Interestingly, it has been downgraded in the Microsoft AntiSpyware software.

M$ Anti-Spyware wasn't that great anyways. Tried it out and didn't like it at all.

Then you never had to clean a spyware install with it. Works VERY well for an MS freeware and is good for helping stupid users realize they're doing something wrong

<----I second that. The fact that it has active protection for free is a BIG +++ too :)

I'd rather see a better source for the information before jumping on the M$ buys Claria bandwagon

Well, it was reported on /. the other day....

Assuming it's true though...isn't it possible that MS will take any valuable algorithms and KILL the spyware side of the business?

Maybe they're doing us all a favor....

IDK, but I'll stay on the fence for the moment.

I beg to differ. I have MS Anti-Spyware installed on my machine and it very rarely finds any spyware if any. Adaware and Spybot-Search and Destroy on the other hand almost always find some crap in the registry or on the filesystem. I'm seriously thinking of uninstalling that MS crap.

Interesting point. Buy the spyware companies and then render them useless in order to make your operating system less prone to attack. Gator has to be the #1 spyware company out there...

Lavasoft has already responded as a result, and now ad-aware flags microsoft windows as a threat offers to remove it.

Exactly, it isn't like they would need an outside company's help to embed something into the OS to track whatever they would want.

If they want to buy them out to prevent them from servicing why downgrade the detection in MS AntiSpyware?

BTW, the software is decent for removal. No single tool is "good" yet.

What, the report that the spyware has been downgraded to "ignore" by default? I don't see any article saying Microsoft has bought Claria. Link?
