This is only the tip of the iceberg. This sort of thing will become more and more common as Microsoft tries to move critical functionality and authorization components of Microsoft applications onto Microsoft .Net servers, so that you would be unable to run any Microsoft applications without getting an okay from Big Brother Billy first.

And, oh, yes, you would also pay by the minute anytime you used Office, Windows Media Player, Windows Messenger, or any other Microsoft app. Since you can't run your Microsoft apps without authenticating them with the Microsoft server first (because they crippled the apps to run that way) Microsoft will charge you by the minute for the privilege of asking for their permission to use your own goddamn computer.

And WinXP is the first step to all of this. So be sure to upgrade!

And it's not like they made good on the threat. I've rebooted and Office still seems to be working. But that's not the point. What I am wondering is this: Why would such a screen ever appear on the screen of someone using a legal copy of Microsoft Office?

Sounds like a bug to me.

Make sure you have plenty of good backup copies of MS 2000 generation software. If suckers start buying xp, the future looks grim indeed.
