Microsoft begins distributing Windows 8 to OEMs

very interesting that they are this far along. i like the system reset option and fast hibernate.. hopefully they have a lot more compelling features otherwise I'm not sure about upgrading from win7.

How is this different from what they have had since vista? Previous file versions? http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl...M0QHuo_XNBw&page=1&ndsp=41&ved=1t:429,r:3,s:0

Edit: Excited for a shorter windows cycle though.

Damn, I only upgraded from XP to 7 a couple weeks ago...

Thanks in advance for beta testing this one, guys. I'll catch up around Windows 9.

I'm not sure really. but does system restore in win7 currently restore the PC to exactly the state it was in at a particular time in the past including data files?
I thought that it only was for programs, registry, etc?

You are a late bloomer for sure. When Vista appeared didn't bother to install it because i didn't thought it would be better than XP. But 7 proved to me things have evolved.
Will try this next 8 version for sure.

If they are going to start churning them out this fast, I hope they drop the price by about 60%. It's not worth the upgrade for only 3 or 5 new features every two years. I can't see this as a substantial upgrade to W7 myself.

LOL

You think that's bad?
I'm still running XP and the only reason I'll consider upgrading is for a new build to support more Memory.

Other than that, XP's been fine for me 🙂

Has been fine is the operative phrase. It's security is already very poor compared to Vista and Win7 and it'll be EOL very soon so that'll get even worse. It's already a huge PITA to install XP on new hardware and that'll only get worse with time as well until manufacturers stop writing drivers for it completely. The only reason to cling to XP is for legacy stuff that should probably be replaced anyway.

This is early prerelease software. They are trying to stick to a 3 year release cycle. The planned release is probably Fall 2012.

I try to skip every other version of windows. Since I am on windows 7 right now, windows 8 is no interest to me.

I seriously doubt I will use anything but windows 7 for the next 4 or 5 years. Or until windows 9 or 10 comes out.

this.

sata + win xp install used to be a NIGHTMARE, no idea if it got better with SP3 or not.

That seems about right. Windows 3.11 was the start for a lot of people.
95 came out and had too many issues. <--- Turd
98 Was Better but still had issues.
ME came out with too many problems <--- Turd
XP came out
Vista came out, again many many problems <--- Turd
Win 7 Came out

Win 8 scares me with all the different changes.

What should really scare you is the rate of development. MS isn't known for being able to do thing quickly and Win7 is only 2 years old now, so that means either Win8 has very little changed (i.e. WinME) and it's just a money grab or the changes will need lots of fixing after release.

I wouldn't be quite that cynical, but I do agree in part. Vista was the big technology upgrade for Windows, and Win7 was the refinement. Given the short development Window I don't see how Win8 is going to be a major tech upgrade, so just where is it supposed to fit in?

Me as well.

I'm waiting for Windows La Mexicananos Y Americanos las Oveurto--Y3K...

So it'll most likely be like WinME, no major changes and just a few flashy new features to make people spend money.

Eh, maybe. I doubt it will be crash happy, and I doubt it's going to come out one year before the next major OS though. It might end up being closer to Win98SE.
