hmm, they have pop-under ads to generate some extra money, but they say they have a whole ton and are making more every day. something tells me they aren't as financially well off as they calim to be.

/me adds MSFT to stock ticker, waiting for the big drop when M$ finally fesses up :D

Seriously though, you've probably got some spyware. Run ad-aware. (or get a better browser)

[A small continuance of compudog's rant.]

What the heck do I need the Windows Catalog for? Does Microsoft get kick backs from products listed in the "Windows Catalog"?

I want an OS with no BS!!!!!!

[/end rant]

I never get pop-ups on Windows Update with my machine. This sounds like stuff lingering in your system. Time for a spyware killier, like Ad-Aware. :)

I run Win 98 SE. I'm no great fan of Microsoft, but yes, they are still supporting Win 98. Last one was Security Update, March 7, 2002. If you want it, they also have the .net security updates for IE 5.5 SR2.

My guess is you've got something running in the background. I've never, on over 150 machines I update regularly, gotten a popup at MS's WU site, or for that matter at any MS site.

I think someone needs to get a CLUE before they start the endless MS bashing.

BTW, never had a pop-up on ANY of MS's sites.

MS doesn't have any pop-unders on their update site (and I just checked to make sure). Sounds like somebody has spyware and needs Ad-Aware... :p

Exactly.

compudog, are you sure those aren't from warez or pR0n sites you visited before heading to Windows Update?

THANK YOU ALL for your suggestions. Ad-aware nixed the pop under ads. My wife had installed WON net for some online gaming and there was spyware stuff going on. Whew! I am not one to bash M$, but, if it were true, I would probably start!

NFS4, I do not typically bash MS. When I received the Critical Update Notification and went to the WU site I got two pop-under ads, (without first examining my system to see if anything was installed without my knowledge.) I had just finished reading the editorial sections or CRN and eWeek and was slightly clouded in my opinion of MS.

joohang, I do not visit warez or pR0n sites. I do have KaZaA installed on another machine on my LAN though I haven't noticed pop under ads on that PC at the WU site.

Again, I thank you for pointing me in the right direction and removing the spyware that was installed.

They support my version of Windows 98 which was purchased less than a month after it came out. You must have Windows 97.
