If you thought that Sony was the only console manufacturer having a really bad day, guess again. After many months of public complaints and outcries, Microsoft has publically admitted that *ALL* (as in every single one ever sold) Xbox360's have a design defect that can lead to their failure. Though Robbie Bach, head of Microsoft's Xbox360 Division refused to elaborate on the issue, the general consensus is that it's one of botched thermal design management and inadequate dissipation of heat leading to component failure. All of the nearly 12 million units currently in the hands of consumers are effected. Though Microsoft has not issued a global recall, they have tripled the warranty coverage period, and are expected to have to dole out over $1 Billion to correct the situation. CRN Australia Reports...

Microsoft has admitted that every one of the 11.6 million Xbox 360 consoles sold in the past 19 months suffers from a design flaw that could cause the device to fail.

The firm will extend the warranty coverage from one to three years to compensate consumers, but does not plan to instate a recall or exchange programme.

Microsoft gaming chief Robbie Bach claimed in a conference call with financial analysts that the design issues surfaced recently.

Well I guess that's why they extended the warranty, because they knew this would get public lol.

I saw that earlier today and thought it was a crap article/blog post. It basically takes MS extending the warranty to three years and saying that that is an admission that every 360 is defective. No quotes from anybody. No sources. No nothing.

It sounds like something a die-hard fanboy or MS hater would write.

1. Why is Sony having a bad day? What did I miss?
2. I hate it when I see so-called journalists making grammatical errors that their so-called editors also missed. Affected.
3. An article like that needs a direct quote. Where are the direct quotes?
4. We already knew that. That's why I bought mine at Costco. :)

I think this was someone at an unknown site writing a flame-bait article in order to drive traffic. Seriously, it is way over the top and has not even a hint of substation behind it.

It worked though. It's on the front page in the games section at Digg.

It doesn't sound extremely legit...but I wouldn't doubt it, based on how many fail already.

I thought Moore said it was related to surge protectors, though? I read that on Destructoid, I think...

MS didn't say anything about every single xbox 360 being defective. What they said is that there have been problems with the system and to make everything easier for the owner they are extending the warranty. The problem that these 360s are having is mostly due to people not putting their Xbox in a place where the fans can actually do its job. They are putting it in places with no airflow and blaming Microsoft for all their problems. I have a first batch Xbox 360, bought in December 2005. I have plenty of friends that have not had the RROD that bought their 360s at launch. That's all I have to say about that.

That's your description of the problem not Microsoft's.

- Many people here and at ArsTechnica have had 360s redring even when well-ventilated.
- Nothing else in people's AV racks are dying except the 360. The airflow is good enough for their receiver, xbox-1, HTPC, PS3, wii, DVD player and cable box.
- Microsoft has changed the cooling design for the 360 and added extra epoxy to the Elite.
- Microsoft is taking a $1 billion extra charge on top of 5 quarters of previous (high) warranty repair expenses.

You can blame the victims all you want, but the evidence is strong that there is a design flaw even though this article doesn't prove it.

I agree with you here. I mean how can I and a friend (as I posted on another thread) have 2 360s each and 1 of those (each) died with 3 rings of death? So the failure rate was 2/4 in my personal experience, but that isn't, by far, a representative sample. Given that, I'd still like to try out the Elite.

well for those of you who didnt read the article, and didnt click the link to the source where they got that information, here you go. oh, and there is a quote.

http://www.crn.com.au/story.as...ID=85600&src=site-marq

quote:

Microsoft gaming chief Robbie Bach claimed in a conference call with financial analysts that the design issues surfaced recently.

"In the past couple of months we started to see significant increases in repair requests and call requests and significant attention from people," he said.

That quote doesn't admit to a design flaw affecting every console though

Either there's a design issue or not a design issue. MS has admitted a design issue, but in past units:

http://www.businessweek.com/te...d=rss_topStories_msnbc

"We had some design issues, and it's a combination of factors that led to the problems." Microsoft said it worked with the contract manufacturers to identify and address the problem, and has taken steps to make sure future shipments do not suffer similar issues.

I think it would be more accurate to say if you own one of earlier units then your at risk.

With all due respect, you don't know what the hell you're talking about.

Between I and my roommate, we had four 360's die on us, 2 a piece. They were sitting on top of a tv stand with nothing else around them in an air-conditioned room. Just because you got lucky doesn't mean that the hundreds of thousands of people who didn't are less intelligent than you.

You really think MS would take a 1 billion dollar hit when the only problem was people putting their their consoles into an oven. That's ridiculous, they aren't a charity. If they had nothing to do with the problem, they wouldn't be making sure that they resolve it.

1.
because all consoles fail in the beginning. especially those made of really advanced technologies stuffed in a small box.

because sony is losing exclusives left and right.

because Wii is pwning both xbox 360 and ps3.

I'm not the mod for this forum, but stop the personal attacks. If you don't have anything constructive to add to the discussion, it would be better to refrain from posting in the thread, instead of doing a drive-by.
