Microsoft: A house divided?

Microsoft chairman Bill Gates and CEO Steve Ballmer are long-time friends. They have made a great team during Microsoft's 25-year-history, with Gates playing the role of reclusive gifted geek and Ballmer the glad-handing sales guy.

But ever since Gates officially passed the torch to Ballmer one year ago on Jan. 13th and stepped back to become chief software architect, instead of chief crisis solver, lots of things have changed at Microsoft.

For one thing, lots of Gates' right-hand men have left the company. In Microsoft-speak, they "retired," "left for family reasons," or "decided to pursue other interests." But according to Microsoft insiders, many of these refugees were pushed out by Ballmer. Folks like former CTO Nathan Myhrvold and former Office guru Chris Peters come to mind.
