Microshaft Silverlight compatibility?

Several times in the last few weeks I came across a couple of news videos that I wanted to watch and it had microshit silverlight stuff in it. I couldn't run it and was clueless if there was a way to install a plug-in. Of course in Windblows XP with Google Chrome I was able to install the silverlight plug-in and watch it.

I am using Mint 7 (ubuntu based) and would I be correct in assuming that pretty soon the Ubuntu software database will have something I can use the program manager to install?

I didn't notice a dang thing different about a "silverlight" video as opposed to a standard one. I wonder if Microshaft isn't just pushing, bullying or bribing their way into getting websites to sport a feature that is currently only supported in Windblows:|

It wouldn't be the first time they have tried a heavy handed appoach to make other OS's incompatible, and it won't be the last. Why don't they give up already, because someone will be able to make it work on linux anyway.

If you did a little bit of research, you'll find that Microsoft has actually worked to make Silverlight plug-ins available for Windows, Mac and Linux platforms.

Silverlight offers a nice alternative to Flash, which has been notoriously buggy and closed off to alternative platforms for years.

Yes, and when I got a pop up window saying I needed to install Silvercrap stuff the link only showed available downloads. The available files were not DEB and like I said I did not know how to install it. Like many people, I prefer an executable or package manager program that will do the installing for me.

Perhaps you would prefer that I do "a little research" and learn everything there is to know about Linux command line/terminal and installing all different types of packages. I could just use the command line all the time and don't even need a GUI.

I mean nobody needs or wants a more modern easier to use Linux OS. That's why they are not developing new releases/distros and that's why Linux is not getting more popular.

Sorry to even post, didn't mean to bug you. But I want to thank you for you helpful response, it really contributed to the thread.

I'm not even sure what format the "standard" youtube video and such uses, but it certainly hasn't been buggy for me.

There's a big difference between "a little research" and "learn everything there is to know". Just searching for silverlight turns up the moonlight packages so 2s of poking around would have answered your question.

The format is flash video and, yes, flash is terrible in general and even worse on Linux.

You guys must be playing different videos than me. I have never had a problem playing flash video online using Windows XP. Been using Linux for about 6 months and that works fine too. I have had several instances where the video is a different format not supported by flash, like an MOV or something else that I didn't have a plug-in for, but anything flash played flawlessly.

Flash sucks man. Take a look at cpu usage when using flash. Then compare that to playing a video file on your hard drive.

It is buggy but youtube works better than other places. Some people can't even watch flash in mac its so bad
Flash is best in windows
