Microphones for recording

I want to do some vocal narration for a set of still image clips I am putting together. I have CoolEdit as well as GoldWave but a crappy pc mic (what came with my system).

1. Can anyone recommend a good mic to use for this purpose? Most of what is out there is for voice recognition software/dictation.

2. My understanding is in order to get a really *good* recording, i.e. anything with vocal/musician quality, you really need to get a mic preamp, a mic that's not engineered for the pc, and feed it through the preamp and then on into the video card I guess . . . not really sure. However, the issue with audio via soundcards (even the good gamer soundcards) is one of shielding. Not enough shielding in concert with numerous internal buzzing electronic components equals one noisy recording. Thus, you're supposed to move this stuff outside the case or get a special card with good shielding . . .

3. Anyone used USB mics? Are they any good for this?

Basically, if anyone knows anything at all, they'll know more than I do . . . and if you have any good reference, I'b be grateful because I've had trouble finding one . . .

Thanks,

D
