Microphone troubles in Steam games

Recently got a mic to use in CS:S and the like but am having a lot of trouble with it. Usually the first couple of times I start CS:S my mic will have some big annoying stutter in it where it's awful on the ears and hardly anything can be heard. Other times I start up CS and it doesn't detect the mic at all. And then finally, sometimes I start CS, and the mic actually works fine :) - All these attempts are within a matter of minutes and there seems to be no rhyme or reason to the mic working or not working. Any ideas?

edit: also, it always works fine in windows/on the desktop.

Could be...how could I tell though? Don't have any other kinds of audio probs in any games.

Yup. I'm using daniel K drivers for vista 64. I was using official creative's but every now and then I would get static when using my mic (only for steam games). Havent had a single problem after installing Daniel K drivers.

Got a link to the latest Daniel K drivers? I can only seem to find articles and discussions about him :x

Yes I'm in 64 bit vista. Using a Zalman MIC1...now you can solve my problem right away, Gothgar :D

This happens to me periodically on my X-fi. To fix it I just go to the sound area and setup my microphone for speech recognition, or whatever it is (you read a sentence about some guy named Peter I think), then it usually gets it back up and running. Very strange, but it works for me.

Hopefully that makes sense, though I'm not sure it will help you at all. In any respect, I'll try to be a little more vague next time I offer help. :p

Must be the same problem with all Creative cards. Wonder if the diff drivers mentioned by watek would fix the problem.

I think I know him. Does he have a kid named Stewie, and a dog named Brian?

I've got an idea, an idea so smart that my head would explode if I even began to know what I'm talking about.

OP, you fix your problem? Let me know how those drivers work out if you try them.

Only drivers I could find through google by Daniel K were on ThePirateBay and were 280 days old. Not sure if that's the one to get or not, but I'm not really desperate.

I don't know about your original problem, but I had that static problem with my X-Fi XtremeMusic every once in a while too. To solve that, I unchecked "Allow applications to take exclusive priority over this device (the microphone)" (or something to that effect) in Sound options in Vista x64. After that, no more static.

Interestingly enough, Viper GTS and I were playing L4D last night and trying to figure out mic problems. If you're using the mic with other programs like Skype, gtalk, ventrilo, or even Steam's own friend-to-friend voice chat thingy, L4D does play nice with the other programs. After we killed everything except in-game voice, it worked perfectly.

On another note, I was having major sound problems after upgrading video cards to the 4850. It's got some HD sound thing on it that gave my Audigy 2 a kick in the balls. Even after removing the 2 cards entirely, wiping drivers with Driver Cleaner Pro, rebooting, enabling and using on-board audio, I still had the same sound problems described in the OP. I ended up just formatting and reinstalling, which took care of the issue. It all plays nice now (except the L4D thing, that game doesn't play well with others :)).

I never tried those drivers out because I read they don't support EAX, which is a pretty big help when gaming. I'll just have to deal with my mic/creative drivers. At least they work more than 50% of the time :)
