Microphone sounds terrible, clears up when I touch the case

Can you fellas think of a reason why my microphone sounds God-awful unless I touch some exposed metal on my case? I live in an old house (1940's), and I don't think there is an actual ground wire in the outlet that my computer is plugged into. I'm getting sorta worried about this 'cause I had to replace a power supply a couple of weeks after I moved in this summer. It was a nice Antec Truepower PSU, too (not the type you'd think would choke & die after about 1 year).

The motherboard is an A7N8X, using the onboard sound. I'm also thinking it could be a problem with my microphone 'cause I'm using the crappy old one that came free with my Soundblaster Live back in 1999. When I speak into it, it just sounds like a bunch of messy bass and I'm completely unintelligible. What I've been doing is connecting a static wrist strap from myself to the case so that people can understand me.

Has anyone else ever seen anything like this before?

Thanks for reading!

Poor grounding of the case maybe ... more likely a poor connection in the mic wiring to the mobo. The static strap idea is good; since (usually) they are fused so that you don't get fried if the alligator clip slip and hits the high voltage; or you grab a water pipe. I assume your PS is not properly grounded if the outlet has no ground wire.
