Microphone problem on ECS K7S5A Motherboard

A friend of mine is using the onboard sound on his ECS K7S5A. When using a microphone with it, it has A LOT of distortion, random clicking noises, etc... I tried swapping in the microphone that I use without any problems, and got the same results. Played around with the volume controls, didn't help. Any ideas as to what could be causing this?

The drivers should be fine. We used the ones from the install CD, and the sound plays fine and everything, just the microphone doens't work so well. Any ideas?

Not that it should be a factor in modern systems but I wonder what processors PinwiZ and Evadman are using, maybe theres a bit of a gap there?

When it comes to AC97, an XP is going to be better than a Duron....not that it should really be noticeable but worth checking anyway.
