Microphone Plays Sound Through Speakers

An annoying feature of Windows XP seems to be that the microphone sounds will always play through the speaker. This serves no purpose. The only way to stop it is to mute the microphone. But then the microphone cannot be used for applications like Ventrilo.

Is there any way I can have the microphone "on" without it constantly playing through the speakers?

Go to the sound mixer, switch to "adjust volume for recording". Now enable another box other than the currently selected one (usually "stereo mix"). This will stop microphone feedback. The microphone will only be mapped to the recording input line.
