Micron/Crucial is going away?

Yeah, looks like Crucial as a brand is done.

I've read that Crucial has been going deeper and deeper into debt over the years and it was simply not sustainable for the market.

Micron can sell it's memory to OEMs without the burden/overhead of actually running a OEM at the same time.

Wow that's sad to see, but also not that surprising. I think we're going to see more of this as it's more profitable for manufacturers to just sell in bulk direct to data centres and enterprise than to have to maintain a retail market, which is full of red tape (sales tax for example) and overhead like shipping, dealing with returns etc.

This is not super surprising. Running a retail outfit alongside a manufacturing concern is a lot more work and you're not making that much money off it since you have to staff and support it; and it comes even crazier to run when your retail division is going to be competing with other brands you also sell your chips to.

To be honest I don't think I've ever purchased Micron/ Crucial RAM unless it came pre-installed on the video card.

Always went with G. Skill but less competition means higher prices!

I mean, it worked well enough for a few decades, just one more thing for AI to ruin I guess.

I've bought Crucial RAM before (and I have some on the way in the mail right now).

I would imagine the margins can be kind of tight in the direct to consumer space. Maybe they decided the juice isn't worth the squeeze any more in that area.

I got the shitty Ballistix back in the day. Went bad just like they all did. I buy various ram depending, but Corsair always gave me the warm fuzzies. Never a problem with their ram.

What's the current defacto replacement for crucial, let's assume I'm a boring middled aged guy who just wants error free reliable RAM at a fair price.

Let's also assume I won't be doing any OC or whatever the cool kids are doing these days. The Toyota Corolla of RAM.

I've had no problems using Team, Corsair, GSkill, AData...

I just pick the max official XMP speed supported by the board/CPU and find sticks that match. Some of the brands, like GSkill, have their own QVLs that you can check to see if your board is listed to better ensure they play nice together (beyond checking the one from your motherboard manufacturer).

I have a pretty good opinion of Corsair.
Had a bad experience with my first few sticks of Team, replacements have fortunately been well-behaved.

That's a really good advice.

In 2017 I made a mistake. I got my first Ryzen CPU.. a R5 1600 (1st gen) with DDR 4 - 2400 RAM.

I knew I could get DDR3200 but back then the speeds were only giving a 2% advantage unlike later gens and there was a heavy price premium.

I think I'm locked into using that R5-1600 forever. I always wanted to update it but though it'd be majorly throttled with the DDR 2400.

I've got some Crucial stuff.

I didn't get if they're killing off the drive division or not, SSDs, M style, etc.

I wonder how this will affect RMA/warranties.

From lxskller's link:
"The company will work closely with partners and customers through this transition and will provide continued warranty service and support for Crucial products."

Interesting decision, given other people have begun pointing out the writing on the wall with the AI bubble.

This is worse than I realized, they provide the chips to many other 3rd parties too, this is going to affect home computing in general very negatively. It seems they are really trying to push us to cloud by making it harder to have compute power at home.

Tech Jesus is about to flip tables. He mad. And rightfully so.

🤣 That's sig worthy.

I have not gotten an "enthusiast" kit of ram using Micron in ages. Always Samsung or SK.

I used a lot of Crucial when I was doing client builds, bitd. Some boards were finicky, and did not like any memory I tried but Crucial.

I have had sticks die from running XMP. OLOy, Patriot, and Apacer. Corsair had a lot of compatibility issues with Ryzen. To invoke an old meme, "He wasn't reaaaaaaady!"

Recently read a couple of RMA experiences saying they were given a refund instead of replacing their ram. Scumbag companies. They know damned well you can't replace the ram for what you paid for it.

Time will tell if this is going to be SOP, or these are isolated incidences.

Wow that's super dirty. Already a piss off enough when you end up with bad ram that mess up a build and now you have no ram at all.

I posted in the stock market thread that I bought 48 GB Gskill for $250 in August. My exact memory model is out of stock again, but it was $750. A close Gskill replacement is $840 for 48gb ddr 5 8200. Its hard to believe I paid $779 w/tax and shipping in August for:

1765166145120.png
1765166193691.png

Now costs $840 for ram, $293 CPU, $229 mobo, cooler is out of stock but lets say $50 = $1412 + tax = $1,535, a 100% increase in 4 months!

I also bought a 5070 last week since my old GPU was 6 years old. More than I wanted to pay but the future is not bright for consumers. :(

dang, i've been using crucial since the early 2000s

haven't built a computer since 2017 though (still rocking this 8700k + 32 gb of crucial ballistix + 3090 GPU) and with prices the way they are, it looks like i'll still be using this machine when it is 10 years old
