Does anyone have a boss like this? They have to have their nose in EVERY LITTLE THING YOU DO!!! I like my manager, she's a great lady, good intentions, and for the most part really sticks her nose out for her employees. But, she has the worst habit of being a massive micromanager. She's constantly in my cube "what the status?" "How are things coming?" "Did you call that guy?" "Can you give me an update?" "Make sure to take a lunch." "Any vacation coming up I should know about?" and on and on and on. And it's not like she's doing it because I can't do my job. I constantly get compliments from customers, her and our boss (hers and mine) about the job I do, and I handle everything. But she is like this with everyone. Micromanage!! Who else has experienced this? Have you handled it in some way? It's starting to drive me nuts.

A client I used to work for had one. He was the CIO (but, it was a smaller company so he was really just a manager). There was a team of about 15 developers and all day he would go around to each one asking, "Progress?". He'd peer over our shoulders for 10-15 min. at a time while we coded and offering suggestions on how to code or do this or do that. Drove us all nuts!

Unfortunately, the best solution is probably to get a transfer to work for another manager.

That was my solution when I was in that position.

The IT director at my last company was reportedly like that. Funny, though, he never did it to me.

After I quit I asked him why (over a few beers). He only micromanaged people he didn't trust. He trusted me to do my job properly, so left me alone.

I told my boss that she didn't micromanage me, she nanomanaged me. With phone calls, emails, AIM, I can't have a moment of concentration it seems.

It really is horrible to have to feel like you're being observed all the time. On my last project (software developer), the president of the company wanted to be copied on all communications with the customer, so every time I received an email from them I'd get, "Did you get that email?" "No, the intarweb is slower for me than it is you!"

What's worse is passive aggressiveness, which seems to go along with the micro/nano/picomanagers. My most recent episode:

"What time did you receive that email?" -- they know when I received the damn email
"And what time did you respond?" -- again, they're copied on all communication, they know

Bah, I abhor managers. Not surprisingly, this is why I'll be self-employed within the month.
