Hi, I'm brainstorming here. The head of my department wants to back up all the departments files on microfiche. Since we have neither the hardware or the know-how to accomplish this, and I don't even know if Microfiche is now obsolete, I'm asking would anyone here have any suggestions of different medias to back up documentation on? Would it be easier to scan the paper work, or are there any other options? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Microfiche? That's doable, but maybe not the best idea. The way it gets onto microfiche is via scanning. But why go through the work of scanning, and still not have a digital version?

Instead of deciding that microfiche is the answer, find a document management firm in your area, explain your problem to them, and see what kind of solution they propose. Explain to them how you use your documents, how often you retrieve them, how you want to locate them, etc. It's not wise to choose a solution when you don't have knowledge of the different options. The appropriate solution will depend on how many documents you have, how you want to retrieve them, how they need to be cross-referenced, etc.
