Microcenter - Phenom II X4 840 3.2GHz Quad-Core $50 - B&M

I hate Microcenter website/ad for it is almost impossible to find out if I am reading it correctly.

On page 2 of their ad located here

as well as one of their clicky adds here

If I buy an AMD 840 for $49.99 and I buy an AMD motherboard that is compatible with this processor, I can get the motherboard $80 dollars off.

Thus I should be able to get this board for $19.99 (99.99-80=$19.99)
ASRock 880G Pro3 Socket AM3+ 880G ATX, which has 4 Ram slots, USB 3.0, SATA 6.0 gbps, supports 140w cpus, Crossfire, and will support the upcomming bulldozer cpus due to being AM3+

Or I could get this board for free. (59.99-59.99=FREE)
Gigabyte GA-78LMT-S2P Socket AM3+ 760G mATX AMD Motherboard which has 2 ram slots, 125w processors, supports Bulldozer since it is AM3+

Am I reading the ad wrong?

I think you are. Going by both the ads you linked, you get up to $80 off the $130 CPU for buying the CPU and a motherboard.
Thus, you get the CPU for $50 effectively. You don't get additional money off the motherboard.

If you buy only the CPU, you only get $40 off so it will be $90 out the door plus tax.

Now, going by what OP linked, you can get just the CPU for $50 with no bundle needed. The ads you linked do not correspond with what OP linked.

Still, even so it doesn't look like you can get the chip for $50 *and* $80 off a motherboard. Sounds way too good a deal anyway.

Then why does it say "$80 off any compatible amd motherboard with the purchase of the AMD Phenom X4 840."

It doesn't say $80 off the processor with the purchase of a motherboard combo, it says $80 off the motherboard.

I am picking up the CPU later today, going to see what deal i can get on a MB. If not, I am fine with $50 for this processor!

Checked the Dallas Microcenter and you can get the CPU for $49.99 but no additional combo deal with motherboard. I was just looking at this over the weekend when it was $89.99 with $50 toward any motherboard. This now bumps the deal up $10 for MB/CPU combo. But it's still a very good deal for the CPU and fan.

This is really a high-clocked Athlon II. Unfortunately it's not the 840T, which is a core-restricted (unlockable) Thuban.

Yeah, it looks identical to an Athlon II X4 650. I wonder why AMD did that?

No matter; $50 is a steal.

No L3 cache. Debating my order now, I really wanted a semi-decent upgrade to my 705e, but no L3 hurts performance. Still good for budget systems, though.

Appreciate the info! 😉

This sucks, about 30 minutes ago I had the CPU in my cart for 49.99. Now when I look at it, its back to 89.99. This is at the STL MC, so YMMV. Will check back to see if it goes back down to 49

Back in stock in Denver, for $59. Just bought one. This will be a nice upgrade to my WHS machine. I'm currently running a single-core Sempron, which I paid $35 for. A Quad core at 3.2 Ghz for $59 is steal a great price.

What's the advantage of using a quad-core CPU to run WHS? I have a single-core Sempron WHS. Just wondering why you are upgrading.

I bought one yesterday and plugged it in to replace my PII x2 545. The 545 was OC'd to 3.8xghz...and I couldn't push it more than this stable.

After the 840 install, it loaded with the same settings as the 545! Then I pushed it to 4.2ghz at 1.525 vcore on Asrock 880G Extreme3. Temps are ~37/57 with ambient temp in the mid 70s. This is stable...been encoding for hours with all cores at 100%...frame rates are almost doubled.

I am very happy with the purchase...$60+tax...same price as my 545!
