Hang on - that's the older pre-Sandy-Bridge i7, isn't it? Probably trying to unload the older technology.

how does it compare to a newer i5 2500, given they're the same price?

That's just what I was looking up. Looking at benches, seems the i5 is significantly better overall, but the i7 is slightly better at video encoding.

I'd say get the i5 2500 over the i7 960; no doubt.

You guys just talked me out of this, I was thinking it was better than an i5 but I guess I should have known this is more of a server chip.

And once you take into consideration performance and power consumption when overclocked against the 1st generation i7 4-core processors, it's all over for the 960. Not to mention Socket 1155 supports Ivy Bridge upgrade path and has Quick Sync option.

160W power consumption difference is unbelievable for a CPU. Interesting how in the BD thread, some still think SB isn't that much better than i7s.
