Doesn't that describe most other Win OSes?

glad win9x is finally dead. Shame they still have to support win ME.

NT/win2k/xp are decent security wise.

Yeah they replaced it with the surprise reboot every so often.

XP Pro > Win2K Pro >Win 9x > WinME

I never understood the people who stay with 2K because they don't like the "look" of XP. XP took the best of 2K and made it even better. 🙂

I'm sticking with 98SE on several boxes. With a strong anti-virus & firewall it works better than ME ever did and it one heck of a lot cheaper than XP.

Microsoft made sure that their NT code base was the wave of the future with the release of ME, that's for sure. It's a turkey, moreso than 98 or 98se. The idea that MS will have to support it for awhile longer is a twisted form of justice, just as their release of it was a twisted marketing ploy.

98 will be around for a good long while, whether MS supports it or not- it still works, and serves most users rather well.

The next step of evolution in the MS business model is obviously leased software, where the end user owns nothing but the right to pay more to keep it activated. If you miss a payment, it quits working...

Windows 98 was the best OS MS ever made. Look at how long it should have been dead when 29% of people using google use win98. That is a lot of people MS hopes to force to an upgrade.

Dunno if I'd go quite that far, Spencer278, but MS will have to provides some new functionality or some incompatible killer app before average users feel the need to upgrade.

Given the retail price of XP vs a new box from Dell, Compaq or HP, I think most new software will come with the box... The new low end boxes will outperform the majority of those currently in use...

And, yeh, the marketing strategy of both MS and the hardware manufacturers is squeezing the small independents out of the computer building biz. Can't buy the parts for the price of a new Dell, let alone the software...

XP=2K with flashy GUI crap and all the security updates/patches/revisions, a new media player, a new version of IE, and a few other minor craptastic differences that most definately do not make XP>2K.

and its about time they phased out crappy 9x support. now im just waiting for them to get rid of FAT.
