Raider1284, Micro Center can be thought of as an east-coast wannabe Frys. They have a lot of shady generic products, generally bad customer service (though YMMV), and their normal prices are pretty bad, but their deal of the week can be a hot deal.
I've been burned by their customer service such that I'll never shop there again, but that's just my personal opinion.
Actually, I've found quite the opposite to be true. Granted, I've only shopped in three of their stores.....two in Atlanta, GA and the one in Northern VA, but have had great customer service, usually except when they're harried by a swamp of customers. Almost without exception, they've been glad to take product back without any restocking fee or service charges, will go look for product in the back if it's not on the shelf, and have actually had them carry junk out to my car.
The "shady" generics you speak of.......what are they? True, they do have their own house brand, PowerSpec. But much of the PowerSpec line is rebranded major name brand merchandise.
Take their Power Spec computer cases. Many of them are just rebadged Cooler Master cases.....and even come with CM instruction manuals and the cases are labeled Chassis by Cooler Master in small print. You get CM quality at a lower price. Good deal in my opinion.
And, yes, they have a brand called Inland. True, it's cheap, but you cannot slam a store for carrying a line of product cheap customers will buy. They stock what will sell......and they stock ATI, PC Power and Cooling, Silverstone, Seasonic, Lian Li, Asus, AMD, Intel, MSI, Gigabyte, eVGA, BFG, and on and on. So, slam them for carrying a cheapie line, but please forget they carry first line name brand componentry.....of course you would....that doesn't make yoru argument at all, does it?
And while it's true they carry some very generic stuff, like cases, so does Fry's and for the same or higher price.
I tend to find much at Fry's is a tad more expensive than Micro Center. Take the Radeon X1950Pro, 256MB PCI-e video card. MC's usual price is $249 but they consistently run a sale on it at $199. Fry's, on the other hand, lists the card at $299 and on sale comes down to $269, when they do it. Fry's also gives a big hassle PM'ing Micro Center, at least the two in Atlanta, despite the fact that both Fry's are very, very close to a corresponding Micro Center.
I actually get waited on in Micro Center......I almost have to beg for help in Fry's, even when the acne-cratered teenage boys that pass for sales help are going nothing but standing around the register/help counter bragging to each other how great their respective computer is.
Yes, I shop both Fry's and Micro Center, but unless Fry's has a huge sale on a product, MC usually gets my money. And right now I'm looking to purchase an ATI Radeon X1950 Pro video card......I got one given to me as a present, so I'm looking to buy another to Crossfire. Hey, Crossfired X1950 Pros for $200....can't beat that!!!
Tell me which I should buy (and I don't want a Sapphire or HIS!):
The ATI X1950 Pro for $279.........at Fry's
The ATI X1950 Pro for $199........at Micro Center
Now, it's true that MC's price is on sale, but it's marked down from $249, still $30 + tax lower than Fry's. And this is anything but an isolated incident........
Shop both, buy where it's better.....and MC is--a lot of the time.
