In terms of just gaming, how much of an improvement would any of these be over an e8400 (@ stock)

the 8xx's are quads, so you would get a pretty big bump in some games... the 6xx probably isn't worth the cost...

i built an 860 box and my kid likes it better with the turbo going to 4.3ghz than all 4 cores @ 3.8, says overall gaming performance is better... and it smokes a 3.8ghz c2d...

Out of curiosity, do Intel motherboards allow overclocking the multipliers on these unlocked I7s these days?

+1

I did the X4 630 about 6 months ago and got the $40 off any motherboard. I picked up a Gigabyte mATX (only installed my video card and sound card, don't need a full ATX) for $120 out the door. Overclocked it from 2.6 ghz. to 3.5 ghz. in a matter of minutes and let me tell you, this thing flies. I went from an E8400 @ 3.8 ghz. and have no regrets. I did buy a Cooler Master 212 but don't think it was necessary as I didn't have to up my voltages. Though, it's quiet so that is nice.

Just picked up an i5-655 unlocked for $149 at my local Microcenter. GREAT deal on this IMO.

The 870 has been at that price point for some time, fyi. Good value though. Also, they're more than likely sold out, but if there's any i7 860s left in stores, they will list at $199.
