P5A-VM (ALi chipset) from Asus or P5S-VM which has the SiS chipset

I'm using the ATX P5A and its stable.

I'm in the exact same boat. I have a mATX Gateway K6-2 rig that the Mobo failed, so I'm in market for one. Truthfully, I decided because according to MOBOT, there's only a dozen of mATX K6-2 mobo's that were ever created, So likely I'll just get a new Case, and a P5A. For that list go to Motherboard.org's MOBOT, set the interface to Socket 7 and the form factor to micro ATX. There's only 24 mobo's listed. And half of them are using SiS 530 which i have heard in my researching, very bad things about so that leaves Aladdin V and MVP3/4. P5A-VM is very good in all likely hood considering how great P5A is, but finding any of these boards is the issue. There's only one mATX board I've seen for sale or on Auction's, and that was a PC Chips SiS 530 board that somebody used and said it was a terribly unstable board, so it should be avoided too. I'd just get a new ATX case and a P5A, or similar board. But, if you find a reseller selling a solid board, let me know, because I wouldn't mind using my current mATX case, but if I need 2 I will get a P5A/Case ok. Good luck, thanks.

Is your heart set on keeping the K6-2? P2-233 slot one CPU's are going for under $20 on eBay and the ZX mATX mobos are dirt cheap too. Or for a little more an 810e mATX mobo and cheap 333-400 celery.

I may be listing a p2-266 and Delta mATX soon, but I'm still trying to decide whether to use it as a remote player for my MP3 jukebox.

I have a spare K6-2 333mhz and I want the Simple Black Box Case. So I'm trying to find a board that'll fit into the case & keep my current stuff in my spare and install linux & use it as a server box. (or is this too slow fer it? me not sure yet)

My main pc is completely diff. specs :) haha! honest! :p

I didn't know much about the SiS chipset... although knowing their general past it doesn't surprise me that its not stable. It offers DMA66 and much more advanced options that other socket 7s didn't at that time though.

Amptron (and maybe others) still carry the PC-Chips M599LMR and M586LMR all-in-one boards, ideal for a simple black box thing.

M599LMR is mATX, uses SiS 530+5595 chipset with integrated VGA plus a C-Media 8738 sound+modem chip and a Davicom or SiS LAN chip, all onboard (modem line interface on a riser which is included).

M586LMR is BAT, uses SiS 540 and offers the same feature set.

Those all-in-ones are not for DIY beginners, they require thoughtful assembly and some experience and patience while installing the OS. Once set up right, they work reliably and well. No speed miracles of course.

Well Peter, I've heard nothing but bad about that PC Chips board. So frankely, I don't feel safe going with it so we'll see
