Just heard on the news that there is going to be tornado drill all day tommorow across michigan schools.

My biggest fear was that there would be a fire during a tornado drill

Everyone cramped into a tight area.

Or a tornado during a fire drill

And this is new??

I grew up in Michigan and there were tornado drills every month starting in spring.

Just warning all my fellow michiganders. I have a funny story about a tornado drill: We had just gotten done with a speech during a tornado drill by my gym teacher about how people die from tornados and as we walked out of the locker room my shoulder hit a shower knob and sprayed everyone.

God I remember those things scaring the holy hell out of me growing up in MI. I'd head for the basement every time a thunderstorm rolled through.😱

Michigan ranks I believe #5 in the US in terms of the state with the highest death toll due to tornados. That is largely because of the infamous "Flint-Beecher" F5 tornado that leveled Flint's north end on June 8, 1953. It was the 9th deadliest tornado in recorded U.S. history and remains the last recorded tornado to have killed over 100 people.

I lived in Michigan for 30 years and never saw anything more than a few funnel clouds, then I was vacationing in New Mexico several years ago and got caught in a tornado. haha

I've only had the pleasure of experiencing one tornado in the past ~19 years. It wasn't a whole lot of fun though and I would rather not go through it again. I much prefer the tornado siren tests in Michigan though. Here in Indiana they insist on doing it at 11 for a full 5 minutes and the stupid siren is no more than 100 yards from my window. Oh well, I guess I won't have to worry about not being woken up.

yeah, great weather we're having.......it's snowing in AA. Wonder if there'll be a campus-wide tornado drill tomorrow. 🙂

Hehe...

Tornados are not that bad... I have lived through several, including when I was visiting with my Aunt and Uncle in Indy (March of 1992) had like 6 twisters go through the city. Best twister I lived through was the one that hit my high school right after I graduated also in '92. Ironically I slept through all the sirens. That funnel hitting the high school was the best graduation gift I could have gotten. I could not stand my HS, and we had always said that if a tornado hit the south building is directly in line with the "path" a typical tornado would take. Sure enough it went right down the center of the building, starting with ripping off the gym roof (which was only 9months old and was already leaking!) and dropped it right on the parking lot of Johns Mansville. (Ironically they are the ones who manfuactured the roof!)

No what I can't stand is that I was stationed on the gulf coast when a tropical storm rolled in..... the base I was on was flooded, and they informed us that those who were not above staff sgt. HAD to stay on base and ride out the storm, that included if a hurricane were to hit. Gotta love military thinking.....
