Good ols American Mentality. Why do something better when it works fine doing it half-assed. Oh well. That's why many Inported cars are better AND cheaper. Some day they'll learn when Ford lays them off because their demand is down because they can't compete as well...

Its easy to think that way, but those same manufacturer's who "try" hard now would obviously commit the same manufacturing and quality mistakes Ford/Chrysler/GM commit. Unless they have a program or system to deter such natural degression once something has peaked. For example.. Honda becomes the #1 manufacturer of cars and makes all the moolah in the automotive sector, what keeps them in perspective of continuing that streak if their is no clear competition in sight?

The American's have yet to do anything about this, they know its there, but I presume the labor unions will have a field day with a "japanese" policy working in the US, since obviously their system is inferior.

(Yet I don't presume those same workers do not think the same about OTHER Japanese products: DVD Players, LCD Screens..etc..)

At GM?s Cadillac plant in Hamtramck, the number of hours to make a vehicle dropped from 43 to 25 after a so-called modern agreement was adopted, McAlinden said.
?Ford and Chrysler know GM is ahead on this and is going to make even more progress this year, getting close to Toyota?s level of productivity,? McAlinden said. ?We?re talking about saving $800 to $1,000 per vehicle and that means GM can just keep running these incentive programs forever
 
Well took them long enough to change their operating structure, but I don't think we'll see a price fluctuation on the Part of Cadillac's. Just because they have put together a reasonable system to shorten the span of a vehicle placed together; does not guarantee the same quality and workmanship of Toyota.

Now they just need to address their design and marketing.
 
You fail to mention that a few Ford plants have already implemented the "team work style". A some GM plants have started it too.

McAlinden said. ?Local 900 is a very smart local and the leadership seems to understand what direction they need to go, but a lot of workers have been in the traditional system for 20 years and don?t want to change.?

People find it hard to give up what they have worked for over 20 years. Changes like these don't happen over night.

I personally will rejoice the day GM and Ford go belly-up and all those unionized idiots are unemployed...and Toyota with their QM standards rules the world.
 
and I was so hoping that I could get an Expedition made with better quality and a lower price.

Do you think this mentality will change as these older folks retire? Or is this going to get passed to the next generation of auto workers?

seems like a lot of people have posted with their opinions but didn't bother reading the article. seems only the old-line workers in this one particular local are against this. most of the new guys seem for it, and most others didn't know what it was about.
