Michigan cigarette smokers nailed with state tax bill from state

Cool. Glad my parents quit smoking 3 years ago.

Edit: Nevermind, I thought it was about an additional cigarette tax. This is kinda harsh.

That's great, I'm also hoping that Illinois tacks on the .75 per pack they are proposing.

That one that owes 2,500 better start coughing it up ..

/going to h3ll
/aisle seat please
/here all week, tip the waitress, try the veal

thats hilarious!!! hahaha.. maybe they'll think twice about slowly killing themselves now, when they can see how much it really adds up to.

Thats just wrong.
They either need to do nothing, or tax ALL internet sales IMO.

They already do, if the online merchant doesn't collect the tax you are required to remit it to the state.

It's nothing new folks, it's just actually being enforced now.

Germain said she was surprised the Web site turned over private information to the state and wonders why the state waited so long to contact her with a bill, which continued to pile up. She said she doesn't know of any friends that received similar notices, but she said they are worried.

Some people are truly too stupid to live.

I think its easier to nail the smokers, because that has to do with tax stamps and alot of strict laws about transporting cigarettes across state lines.

The internet sales tax thing is totally voluntary for now. (in Michigan) just don't claim it.

Idea: if you think it's wrong, please ID yourself as a smoker or non-smoker please..

I'm a smoker, I think its wrong.
That said, I also do NOT buy my smokes off the internet. The reason I think its wrong is it simple stereotyping (again) against smokers. If whatever State is going to force a lost tax collection due to sales of cigarettes over the internet, they need to force a tax collection for ALL internet sales, period.

We bought smokes online from esmokes.com also but our package was months late .. we finally found out they were seized by customs upon hitting the US. When we disputed the charge with Fleet they were aware of the situation already & reversed our charge, appartly Esmokes isn't arguing with anyone.

That's bullsh!t. If states want to tax transactions within their borders, like newegg in cali or all of the states that have dell warehouses, but I have a real problem with this. Non-smoker.

There is an easy fix for this though..... get bogous name added to one of your CC's..... that's not against TOS.... buy cigs or w/e online and have them shipped to a bogus name at an adress that can't be traced to you.

there was a topic about that a while back.... apparantly Esmokes prefered way of dealing with it's customers after the seisure was chargeback....

The law says that with cigarettes under $50 is ok to transport across state lines. This should go under the radar. Although, From that Free Press story, it sounds like there were some people making some really hefty purchases.. maybe owners of QuickyMarts etc.., and selling the cigarettes and making a hefty profit since they didn't pay tax. So, I guess anyone who purchased over $50 can either 1) simply pay the tax or 2) have a lawsuit for trafficing smokes.
I do hate to see the average consumer who bought the smokes for themselves get hit with this, but I would like to see it shoved up the QuickyMart owners asses.
Nonsmoker.

How would you all feel if everyone got state taxed for everything that they purchased on line no matter what it was?...this is just the beginning IMO of unfair resident state controlled big brother in action...not important if Ismoke or not and what kind 😉
