I think you're being a bit harsh saying she "punked out". She has an injury. What she did makes great sense to me, so why dishonor her over it?

What would have made sense would be to let Emily Hughes go in the first place instead of selfishly expecting that she was going to have a chance at a gold with all her past injuries.

She basically put up a big fuss to get in, then bows out before even competing.

How is it selfish? She thought she could compete and proved that she can, I don't see anything selfish with that. The fact that she's bowing out shows that she's not in it to try and win the gold for herself ...

Didn't she get bumped out of a previous olympics for Nancy Kerrigan? If so, I think she deserved to give it a go this time around.

Yes she did. In the 1994 Winter Olympics I believe.

Edit: I love Nancy Kerrigan though! She called Michelle to wish her good luck after Michelle won the approval of the IOC to skate in this year's olympics. I thought Michelle deserved a chance, but it is just too bad she is not in well physical condition. She did the right thing by pulling out early to give the USOC time to petition for a replacement.

Are you retarded? You're complaining about her wanting to get in and fulfill a lifelong dream in the last ever opportunity that she was ever going to have in something that she was extremely capable of? And THEN you complain about her bowing out before competing?

Sometimes the heart and desire of a true competitor can overcome injuries, however in this case it was not meant to be. She thought that given time she'd have been able to prove herself worthy, how can you blame her for trying? Even at less than 100%, Kwan still is a very capable competitor, she is a world champion, and still has the heart of one.

Now, she IS letting Emily Hughes compete and giving the US a chance at getting gold in figure skating, rather than embarrasing herself and the US in the event. Would you rather her just say, "oh I suck, I don't want to compete in the biggest event of my life, let someone who has their entire future ahead of her take my place instead".

Do you have something against Kwan? She's one of the greatest figure skaters the US has ever produced. She at the very least owed it to herself, and she was owed the chance to potentially compete to pursue what she has always been looking for and finish off one of the greatest stories ever put together.

I mean, I know it makes some people feel better about themselves to discredit those that are far greater than them, but she definitely does not deserve any backlash for her actions.

it's unfortunate, but she did say if her injury kept her from performing up to her standards then she would withdrawl.

also, she eeked in on her name in the first place. now the girl who rightfully won the spot can have her chance.

What's this talk about "gold"? I thought it was widely understood that even at her best, she didn't realistically have a shot at gold. She's awesome/incredible/among the best, but so are most of the other olympic athletes.
