He then continued his racist tirade by saying, "thats what you get for interrupting the white man". Anyway, isn't he Jewish? I wonder if the same crowd that attacked Mel Gibson for his anti-Jewish remarks will now crucify Michael Richards for doing worse? After all this guy wasn't even intoxicated or apologetic about his behavior, he's just a hardcore racist who wasn't ashamed to admit it on stage.

We were deeply disturbed at reports that Michael Richards repeatedly shouted a racial slur and made other insensitive remarks apparently aimed at African-American members of his audience.

Richards' repeated use of the 'n-word' and apparent reference to lynching is offensive in any context. There is no excuse for such insensitive and bigoted language. It has no place in a comedy club and no place in America, and must be clearly repudiated.

We hope Mr. Richards will now take a public stand against appeals to racism and bigotry and publicly apologize for his poor judgment in shouting them from the stage.

That struck me as odd as well.

As for the topic at hand, I don't really think Richards was speaking out of racial animus - he didn't even seem angry to me - but more out of a desire to be provocative. It was definitely really stupid in any case.

If you can't handle the language at a comedy show then I suggest you not even attend one ever in your life. You need to have a thick skin to deal with what is said and with hecklers. This isn't even that bad IMHO...I've seen worse. We don't even know why this happened and who started what all we see is the aftermath of a argument. From what I gather those guys where busy talking through his stand up act and calling each other niggas. Sounds like Richard had enough of it and called them out and pointed out how stupid they were acting. Of course since the video is only shot at a certain time frame you don't get the full gist of the what went down.

Wow. I think he started out with just some joking, like Comedians often do, by calling out some audience members. It certainly quickly got out of hand and once making the initial comments was destined to dig a hole too deep to get out of. Sucks to be him, because no matter what some audience members may have done, it's him who loses out in this situation.

This is why certain things should never be said. Call it "Political Correctness" if you must, but there are certain words/terms that carry a lot more weight for some than merely tonal inflections.

Depends on the club, the circumstances and the comic...I have never encountered such behavior at a comedy club, but I have witnessed people be disruptive during movies, and subsequently escorted out...heckling or otherwise disrupting an entertainment event is not acceptable behavior or respectful towards the other audience members.

After all this guy wasn't even intoxicated or apologetic about his behavior, he's just a hardcore racist who wasn't ashamed to admit it on stage.

Ready to crucify the man already? My read on the chain of events is that he was attempting to be provocative or outrageous, and the attempt derailed...read his body language and such...looks like he was aiming for nutty Kramer-like remarks and embarass the two hecklers, but failed miserably.

I am sure the media will blow this out of proportion...the usual suspects will make the usual statements, Richards will probably have to apologize, and the hecklers will gain their 15 minutes...and probably sue Richards because our society rewards such behavior.

True on both accounts, but they are moot points. Merely uttering those words causes such a reaction in the listener that any chance of avoiding conflict are next to impossible.

Do you even know what the word "hypocrites" means? What does one thing have to do with the other?

I am not making excuses for what Richards said, just saying that it appeared to me to be an act, rather than comments made based on true racism. That isn't to say he isn't a racist - I have no idea - but I don't take his comments as being based on racist beliefs. Mel Gibson, OTOH, was not playing to an audience - I believed, and continue to believe, that his anti-Semitic remarks WERE indicative of anti-Semitism. In any case I don't see the relevance of Mel Gibson, or my thoughts on him, to this discussion. I also don't see the relevance of your speculation in your incoherent OP that Richards is Jewish. What difference would it make whether he is Jewish (which I don't believe he is) or not?
