Michael Phelps

SALISBURY, Md. (AP) - Six-time Olympic champion Michael Phelps was arrested last week and charged with drunken driving.

A trooper saw the 19-year-old swimming sensation go through a stop sign Thursday night, state police said Monday. The trooper saw signs of intoxication and arrested Phelps for driving under the influence, police said.
Phelps also was charged with violation of a license restriction and failure to obey a stop sign. He was released early Friday.

The swimmer from suburban Baltimore won eight medals at the Athens Olympics, including six golds.

Phelps, wearing a Baltimore Ravens jersey, was introduced to the crowd before the team's game Sunday night.

This is disappointing. After the Olympics I really had a lot of admiration for him.

Hopefully this won't become a habit.

It doesn't have to be just with swimming, it just seems to be a trend that develops with young popular athletes who make it big then ruin their reputation with stupid things like this. And it was a question....not a comment!

My thoughts exactly Balt.

Yes, because drinking ultimately leads to the ruin of every single one of its users.l

So did they issue a sobriety test make him blow or just booked him without administering any tests?

I'm sure the Maryland State Police followed SOP when arresting him for DUI. If not, his case will be tossed out in court. Don't worry about procedure, the MSP likely has it covered.

After watching the Olympics and listening carefully to what was said about him, I'm not at all surprized. The announcers made it sound like he does nothing but party, doesn't care about school, and listens to music which (yes I'm stereotyping here) typically doesn't match well with people who don't drink. In fact, I'd be surprized if athletes like him didn't get arrested for something. Youth, testosterone of an Olympic athlete, sudden fame, and sudden wealth don't mix well.

Usually your sarcastic trolling is a little more relevant and amusing. Perhaps you should start being more selective. Quality > Quantity.

The issue here is not that he was drinking. He was drinking and driving. As I said, hopefully this is just a one-time incident, but a lot of people who get one DUI get more (in part because every time they get pulled over a cop is going to see that they've been busted for it in the past).

I think most drinkers have driven drunk at some point in their lives. I think DUI's have gotten blown out of proportion. One doesn't show someones character. 3, however, is real bad, and shows compulsive leanings that can kill someone. Some guy getting pulled over at 3:00 a.m. with a high blood level should not be painted a monster. Someone on their second, at 8 pm, on a highway, should be seriously dealt with.

Usually the post are more enthralling and open for creative responses. This thread does not quailify.
btw, it's not trolling.

Nope, didn't miss that.

About 25 years ago it was perfectly acceptable to drink and drive. But, girls wore full muffs and disco was in, so I guess it's a moot point.

DWI and DUI is such a crutch for law enforcement currently. They will look for ANY excuse to pin that on you. It's as if they get some big monthly bonus if they bust a certain amount of drivers for DWI. I've been pulled over stone cold sober after a night at my sisters dance recital, they INSISTED I was drinking that night. They told me if I didn't come clean with them they were going to arrest me. So after doing all their stupid little tests and passing them all, they still insisted I was drinking that night.

Another time I was pulled over at 10am in the city of Buffalo. The officer said that when I took my left hand turn I crossed over the yellow centerline of the road I was turning onto. He said that the reason was that I was drinking and driving and that I should step out of the car and talk to him. After the whole rigamarole of tests and them trying to get me to confess that I've been drinking they finally came to the conclusion that I was sober, or that I had been drinking and was very good at covering it up.
I was running errands for work, I must have been slamming beers like a champ in that 15 minutes.

Society is making dui out to be the bane of human existence as well as a reason to be fully discharged from accepted society.

Yeah, the driving part is the key thing -- as if anyone would care if he was swerving in his swim-lane. ;)

I'm just saying this isn't national news. If he gets another DUI, he's an asshat who should have his license taken away. If he doesn't do it again, then who cares. Even our president got a DUI. But back in the early eighties, getting one wasn't a big deal.

Ah, yes, the 80s -- when vehicular homicide was cool!
