Half the people who are reading this thread and get married and divorced in the future will be paying or splitting assets with their ex's sometime in their lifetime.

Uh..I'd say more than half. Judging by the average ATOTer's perception of women and marriage.

Only half of people that get divorced pay or split assets with their ex's?

Please, kind sir, educate us. I can't wait to hear how everything we're saying has no justification whatsoever.

And this is why this country is so screwed up. They should base divorce settlements on a person's worth and knowing what we know about his wife, she would've struggled to earn 50k/yr.

Because clearly all women are filthy greedy whores like ATOT believes.

If you all feel this way, the best hope is that you will never get married in the first place.

Which is ridiculous, because how did she help him become a better basketball player or a better sponsor? How was it a collaborative achievement? Just ridiculous, she gets to be married to possibly the most famous American athelete AND she gets to take almost half of the money he earned during the marriage?

Maybe she was a sponsor agent, who knows, then maybe I could see that being reasonable.

This is just applying the law to an unusual case. Sorry, but he knew the law, and hsould have made plans for this, or, y'know, not cheated.

Not all women are filthy, greedy whores.....just most of the women that are getting divorced are. ;)
That's when the true colors come out.
And the law is on their side, allowing this...that's what most guys get angry about, because it doesn't work both ways. We all realize that what happened to Jordan is simply the law doing what it's currently written to do....we just are saying it should be changed.

Seriously....what did Mrs. Jordan do for MJ and his career that my wife doesn't do for me? Or anyone else's wife? Cook? Clean? Raise kids?
Hell, probably she didn't even have to cook and clean....all she had to do was take care of the kids, and take care of MJ.

Yet she hit the jackpot by marrying the greatest basketball player ever. If MJ was a self-made businessman, and she had worked all the long hours growing the company with him, sharing the burden, etc...then hell yes, I'd say she deserves and should absolutely get half.
But she married the best basketball player in the NBA at the time, already a multi-multi-millionaire, in his prime as a player and endorser......she KNEW what she was getting. Paid, one way or another.

And on another note, if she hadn't let herself go and get so fat, maybe he wouldn't have cheated. I know that's no excuse for what he did, but damn....you're married to Michael Jordan, and all you have to do all day long is stay in shape and take care of his kids. Dude has hotties throwing themselves at him every day, and you let yourself turn into a fatass. Not a good move, but I guess now it doesn't matter....she's got it made.
And again, that's just a side note, her not being physically appealing still doesn't excuse MJ's behavior.

I'll be the first to admit that I don't think she deserves $150M, but she deserves a good bit of money.

1. For all you idiots say she hitched a ride on the "Gravy Train" and knew what she was doing

"Michael says that what attracted him to Juanita Vanoy when he met the South Side Chicago native in 1985 was her independence." They met in Feb of 1995. During the end of his first basketball season.

They dated for 4 years before they were married. He was NOT MJ the "superstar" before they met. It was his first year in BB, and you forget to remember that he broke something and only played seven games in 1985/1986. No one had a clue that he'd go on to average 38 points a game in 1987. Was she a freaking psychic?

2. For idiots like 911 that need to have it explained why she deserves some money. Here's the first one.....their children. Who exactly do you think was at home raising their children while he was out on the road for 8 months of the year? Who was helping them with school work and caring for them while they were sick. Mike was out on the road becoming the superstar, but she was at home raising their FAMILY. You are essentially saying that what she did was worthless. He was out playing a game..but she was helping his children grow up.

Most women getting divorced are filthy, greedy whores. Even the ones getting divorced cuz hubby couldn't keep his d1ck out of the groupies/babysitter/secretary.

Got it.

TBMK it is the application of the law, not the laws themselves that can be seen as sexist. The problem is that ethically, the question to be asked is 'what duty of care might one party owe the other' and 'what might one party have given up in order to be in the marriage'.

The answer is never clear-cut, especially to the second question. The default 50% number is potentially much less fair in cases involving much less wealth, and much lower incomes. $150 million sounds like an awful lot, but it's nothing compared to $500/month alimony for someone who only makes $2000/month.

I wasn't generalizing....I was talking about this specific situation. Sure, there are plenty of men just as you describe, but there are more than plenty of women who get far more than necessary in child support while the man can't even buy himself a house to live in, and this when the woman was the one who cheated in the first place. Besides, your example is less likely to be right than mine.

But nice try on getting off-topic anyway.

At any rate,I think if people don't want to run the risk that they'll have to split their assets they're probably better off not getting married.

As to The Jordan's situation,I think it's sad it came down to this after 18 yrs.

That's a complete straw man argument. If you're getting divorced, obviously you shouldn't have gotten married in the first place. The point is that you don't go into a marriage assuming it's going to fall apart and get ugly.

Look, the issue here isn't greedy, whore women. It's really not. The system is set up so that the man gets screwed in at least 8 different ways if the woman chooses to get nasty about it. There's an inherent flaw in the system and it needs to be fixed. If the system was set up so that men almost always came out ahead, human nature is probably that they would take advantage of it as well.

The legal system is supposed to be set up to save people from themselves. Saying that the resolution to the problem is simply "don't get married" is incredibly short sighted and conveniently ignores the fact that there's a problem to begin with.

you do sound bitter though...perhaps you think could have done a better job than her as a whore for less or maybe you got raked through the coals on a divorce?

what an asinine post.

Yes, it (bolded) is. Especially when MJ is a *well known* playboy and adulterer so the only whores in this story are the sluts he banged outside his marriage. With a perspective like that on women I'm guessing you don't do well in relationships.

Seriously, don't ever get married. Just don't do it. It's not worth it. Just date forever. And don't live together either. I hear after a while you are common-law married, and that's just as bad.
