Michael Jackson or Elvis: Who's Bigger? *POLL*

Ok, with all this Michael Jackson in the media and various AT posts about MJ, some people say that MJ was the greatest pop star who ever lived - in effect, he started pop music. But since I was born in 1985 and wasn't there to fully experience music (some say at it's best) who was bigger? Obviously Elvis rocked up the stage in the 50's, but between them who was the biggest phenomenon.

Votes?

Elvis, no doubt about it. He stil had women swooning over him almost 20 years after he started.

Why not try a real comparison? Like Elvis and the Beatles?

I don;t know who the hell is more scarier. Dead Elvis or Michael Jackson...

I'd have to go with the walking race-converting plastic dysfunct.

Without Elvis there never would have been a Michael Jackson. Hmm I guess that Disfigured Monstrosity can be blamed on Elvis then:)

On another note, at least MJ was married to Elvises daughter for over a year, Nick Cage didn't even make it past 3 months. Does that mean Jackson's more of a man than Cage (or that Lisa Presely is just sick)

I actually like MJ's music more, just because that's my taste but Elvis is definitely bigger and more influential as a musician.

My serious answer is that Elvis is the clear winner since he almost single-handedly changed the face of modern music. He brought rock n roll to the masses. MJ set some serious album sales marks, but the music itself wasn't particularly groundbreaking.

Look at the names. Someone who goes by only one name (or their initials) is a legend. This one definitely goes to Elvis. If you say "Michael", or even "MJ", very few people will immediately think of Michael Jackson.

Elvis started the modern music generation. He broke open a stodgey music scene with his hip gyrations and sultry music. Michael Jackson made pop music much more mainstream and he broke some sales records, which cannot be ignored. But I think Elvis did more for music because he was in the right place at the right time, wheras MJ just benefited from Elvis's original contributions.

you may be right. its just sad/unbelievable what Michael has done to himself. What IS his problem? he has respect, money, money, women, admiration. Why does he do this stuff? He defies logic.

Huge money and fame seem to come with the cost of a proportional loss of grip on reality for some reason. <shrug>

Uhhh....

rotflmao. are you serious?

Your joking, right? Elvis is a very rare name compared to Michael. If Michael's name was something like Gavin, then everyone would know who you were referring to.

Maybe he's screaming like a girl BECAUSE he's grabbing his crotch?

He most definitely did not start pop music. But people like to forget just how huge Michael Jackson was. He basically could do no wrong in the decade of the 80's and was the biggest star in music for a period of time. Thriller is the best selling album of all time. He had a huge worldwide following. Then we started finding out what a weirdo the guy is.

Elvis wins this one though. He was one of the creators of rock and roll and was the most popular early performer of it. His music (especially the early stuff) is far more influential on the musicians that followed him. He was a movie star in his day. As a cultural icon or as a musical influence he easily supercedes Michael Jackson.

elvis, only because he died before he got to ruin his image totally.
Yeah, but he still did severely hurt his image. I think a lot of people under 30 instantly think of the bloated Las Vegas white jumpsuit Elvis when they hear his name. With all the jokes about the 70's fat, drug-addicted Elvis, it can overshadow what he really did for music in the 50's.

If you guys think the generation gap from Elvis to Michael Jackson is big, look at what pop music was immediately before Elvis. *That's* a generation gap.

Physically it was elvis by a mile :D

As for impact id say they were both a huge impact on music in their own way.
