So what the hell was that horse scene about? Did he go to the horses on purpose or did he just randomly drive somwhere, get off and the bomb was detonated?

The image of the horses was very similar to a picture in the book his son is talking about all movie. You see the picture briefly when he is rummaging the apartment for clues and finds his son's book there with notes inside.

Just watched the scene again. I wouldn't have known those were horses if you didn't say it haha.

yea it did seem out of place, i didnt notice the relation to his sons book either, figured he was just getting out to go look at some peaceful stuff to take a breather from everything, good movie
