Mice: MX500 skips, while IE3.0 does not?

I grabbed an MX500 from a local store today, and I think that it's actually skipping, whereas my Intellimouse Explorer never did. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm not using Mouseware; I just yanked the Intellimouse, put in the MX500, and rebooted. The skipping is very rare, but it's definitely there, and pretty annoying.

Using a 3M PMS. Yes, why should drivers affect that? If I HAVE to install Mouseware to get skip-free usage, I'm returning this. The only other possibility that I can think of is that it's more sensitive to my WD 80 GB SE's CPU spikes. Maybe whenever I read or write to this drive the mouse freaks out a bit. Didn't have this problem with the MS mouse, however.

it's your POS 3M surface. it's too reflectave for the eye to get the proper reading. Try a piece of paper over it and see it never ever skip again :) The 3M is for ball mouse not optical. Whether or not your IE skips is irrelevant to the fact that it was never ment to work with optical.

I'm sorry are you some kind of idiot? You want your product to work without installing the proper drivers? Yeah that must mean its a crappy product, you moron. Please go return it then by all means if it makes you happy.

and I wasn't joking about the 3M surface...for some reason (I guess the light is stronger on the MX mice and reflects too much off the surface of the pad) the 3M pad is garbage with this mouse

My Logitech Dual optical never skips, & I have never installed any drivers.

Plugged the mouse in, upped the refresh rate, & called it good.

I can see no logical reason why the MX500 would be any different, but since two people have suggested so I would love to hear an explanation.

I'm using it in USB mode, which is more prone to jittering when you get hard drive activity going. I've never liked to, or had to, install mouse drivers since Windows came along. I'm not about to start. Thanks for all your help, though.

EDIT: I've used Logitech mice in the past, and had no problems with them.

Cat, uninstall the Intellimouse drivers, install the Logitech drivers, and then get back to us. If it still skips, change your 3M PMS. I'd like to know how this turns out because I'm planning on getting an MX500 too :)

I haven't iinstalled Intellimouse drivers. I'm using XP, which has wonky mouse support anyway, in my opinion. Someone needs to rip 2K's mouse drivers and put them into XP.

Never had problems with my MX500 tracking... best mouse I've ever used bar none..

love the feel, love everything about it.

it could just be the surface you are using.. some mice MAY be more prone to picking up on irregularities on the surface..

I've got the same problem with my MX700 with the 3M PMS. Guess the MX sensor is too sensitive as my several different Microsoft mice all work without a hitch on this pad. The MX700 behaves the same whether I use the generic winxp drivers or the latest mouseware.

For God's sake, please install the drivers and get a better mousing surface, or just dont use a mouse pad at all like me!

Piece of paper seems to have helped. I really enjoy the feel of the 3M pads, however. Is there a less reflective 3M pad with the same surface friction out there?

I got my MX500 a few days ago (using PS/2 port), and am using it with 3M mousepad that I had. Sometimes I've noticed that the cursor starts jittering and freaks out. It has problems tracking movement. This lasts about 15-20 seconds, and then it returns to normal. I thought it was the mousepad, because my 3M has a very dark picture of "space and stars" on it. I put it on my desk (wood-grain surface), and still it jitters sometimes. My desk is kind of shiny, so maybe that is the problem. But what's strange is that the mouse will start working for a long time, using the 3M mousepad, and only very rarely start jittering. Then it always fixes itself. I may have to go get a light-colored mousepad.

I use my MX500 with a sUrface 1030 and it has no skipping problems. I got this mouse when it first came out and the drivers that came with it were horrible. I uninstalled them and the mouse performed much better. Logitech did release a new driver which I have tried out and it works fine. Either way, you should have no skipping problems with or without the drivers installed.

It might just be your surface... I knew a guy that was using his optical mouse on a map of the world for some reason... yeah, it skipped alot.

Using mine on a dull, flat surface. No skipping for me. Then again, I'm also using the new v9.75 mouseware drivers as well.
