mic jack on front panel not working

Just bought a lovely pair of Sennheiser headphones with a microphone headset (the PC150) and plugged it into the front panel audio jacks on my P160 case. The headphones work fine but no joy with the microphone - however it works fine when you plug it direcly in the back of the PC.

Looking at the front panel audio pins on my mobo (A8N-SLI) I've got four unsed pins (NC, +5VA, MICPWR and MIC2) and my case has two mic connectors marked MIC and MIC BIAS. Case manual says connect MIC to microphone power pin and MIC BIAS to microphone input pin so I connect MIC to MICPWR and MIC BIAS to MIC2 - nothing happens. I've tried moving MIC BIAS to the +5VA but also nothing happens.

Any ideas? Or have I just wasted 50 quid on a headset that I can't use with my front panel audio jacks?

I've had a close look at the Windows sounds and audio control panel and I'm fairly sure it's set up to record from the mic correctly - and it works fine from the back ports.

I'm using the Realtek drivers and associated Sound Manager thing which detects the microphone when plugged in the back but not when plugged in the front - can't see any sort of options / properties tab that might allow me to change it. That's why I thought it must be some sort of case / mobo wiring thing.
