I have an Abit IS-7V Mobo with onboard sound.

I also installed a CL SB Live!.

I use a Jensen desktop mic that is bendable.

Line-in and Line-out work fine on both.

The mic works fine when connected to the onboard sound.

The mic seems to have a LOT of background noise when plugged into the SB.

I have to turn the mic waaaay down but you can still hear what I assume is ambient noise.

I'm in a fairly quite room.

There's deffinitly something noisy about that connection.

Thanks

Nothing is checked off in any software to enable any gain.

I stored the SB in the antistatic bag it came in.
It was taped shut and in the box it came in.
Nevertheless, I gave a quick wipe around the connections.
I suppose there could have been a little dirt in the inner edge of the connections.
I'll check but I don't think that's it.

If you mean the jack on the mic is dirty, I'm using the same mic to connect to both sound "cards" and the gain only occurs with the SB.

Let me know if you think of anything else.

Thanks

It does sound like the sensitivity of one is much higher than the other for the Mic input. Open the Windwoes equalizer > click on the Options Menu > Click on the Advanced option > an Advanced radio button will appear on the Mic slider and pernaps others > click the Advanced button on the Mic slider > make sure the Mic boost is not selected. Some sound cards also have jumpers right on the card to select Mic sensitivity - check to see if there is one and how it's jumpered.

I checked the properties of both devices in XP and in Adobe Audition before I posted. I'll check the SB manual and card fro jumpers.

Thanks
