N. Miami Police Drop Swimming Requirement

In explaining the change in policy, Celestin said Thursday he wants the police force to reflect the diversity of North Miami, which is 60 percent black.

The issue surfaced in North Miami a year ago when a Haitian-American city councilman asked police to drop the requirement because, he said, many blacks cannot swim. Recently, Police Chief Gwendolyn Boyd-Savage, who is black, went along with the idea.

"We suffer a terrible cultural deficit when it comes to swimming," said Dunn, a professor at Florida International University. "The mass of urban black dwellers have no access to water, except for a bathtub. That's why we can't swim as good as whites."

What? I don't buy that, around here, since more blacks live in apartments, they're more likely to have access to a pool. I have a house, no pool. I can't swim, and I'm not black.

Not the apartments I've seen and I've been to some wicked parts of SF and Oakland. Nevertheless, I imagine if you want a job as a police officer, you need to prepare yourself for the tests which might include spending a few hours a night for a couple weeks down at the Y learning how to swim. Or elect liberal officials who will appoint liberal officials who will put the public's safety in danger for some good old fashioned AA....YEEEEEEHA.

Bad idea. First of all, almost everyone in Florida has access to a swimming pool. It isn't North Dakota, for goodness sake.

Secondly, the drowing rate for blacks is alarmingly high. We need to be teaching blacks to swim if they are going to live in Florida. We have lakes everywhere so it just isn't prudent to not know how to swim. Guys drive off the road into a lake or retention pond and drown in part because they can't swim. They go out fishing and have a few too many beers and can't even get 50 yards to shore. One guy drowned in about 6 feet of water because he got so scared! That stuff is in the news every day here. Little kids die in swimming pools every year because they don't know how to swim and are left unattended. It's a real heart breaker.

The problem is with the parents. When I moved to Florida I looked around at all the water and decided my daughter was going to learn to swim. By age 7 she could swim 2 miles non-stop. Black parents didn't learn to swim so they don't teach it to their kids. It's mostly cultural.

Furthermore, there are a few well-known black swimmers. Alex Forbes here in Central Florida is one of the top high school swimmers in the nation. He swam with my daughter's team for two years.

Anyway, black kids are missing a college scholarship opportunity if they don't learn to swim. A lot of these white kids are way out of shape and can be easily beaten at the club level. Trust me, I've seen Alex do it time after time. There's more to life than basketball...sheezh.

I'm 61 and can swim at least 5 miles non-stop, so ANYONE can learn to swim if they aren't disabled.

Can black folks not learn to swim? This is insane. What are they going to do when one of these guys fails to even try to rescue someone that's drowning? Or when some crook is smart enough to swim away instead of run away from a black cop?

By using this reasoning they shouldn't bother having white cops learn to shoot because white suburban dwellers have little access to guns.

At the risk of sounding much like my 'women are just like men' comment that got me banned, black folks are just like white folks, and I am sick of people using race as an excuse to lower the bars of society to the lowest common denominator.

It's the same reason they can't get good grades to get into good colleges. We need to help them by lowering the standard or having quotas...it's as simple as that and if you disagree with me you're a hillbilly neocon Nazi.

Any black person in Miami can take a bus to the beach and learn to swim or take lessons. Black people are inherently afraid of the water though I think. Probably due to crocodiles in Africa and their ancestry or something. I have never seen a black person swim and I lived in Miami for 8 years. I have asked a few about it and they just say they don't know how to swim and don't want to learn either. That is why I think it is a genetic trait.

It's just learned behavior. I doubt the black members of SEAL and Marine Recon teams would be able to progress to their respective professional levels if there were some physical draw-back unique to blacks in terms of swimming.
Though, I have seen a few black guys jump into kiddy-ends of pools and act like they went up to their eyeballs in quicksand...
