L?Anse Creuse High School students were shaken up Wednesday after a classmate was stabbed in his science class.

It started around 12:30 at the Harrison Twp. high school during fifth hour. Two 17-year-old senior students exchanged words before one pulled out knife with a 3-inch blade and stabbed the other.

"Everybody had to stay in the classroom and the bells wouldn't go off, and we had to stay there until announcements," a female student told 7 Action News.

The school?s 1800 students were held in their fifth hour classes as police were called in to investigate the stabbing.

"One of the kids ended up with a knife wound in one of the legs," Macomb County Sheriff Mark Hackel said. "The kid walked over to the teacher, handed the knife over to the teacher and said ?I did something to the individual,? and walked himself down to the principal's office."

The stabbed 17-year-old was taken to Mount Clemens General Hospital for stitches in his leg. Neither of the young men has been in trouble with the school, but because of school policy, the stabbing suspect may be expelled just days before graduation.

"He will have a hearing," school superintendent DiAnne Pellerin explained. "We will have to conduct an investigation and the law is pretty clear. Weapons in school mean expulsion."

The last day of school for senior students at the high school is Friday, and graduation is scheduled for the first week of June. It is unclear whether the young man will be allowed to graduate with his class. If the school expels the teen right away, he would not be allowed to.

Police had originally planned to release the teen to his parents, but later decided to hold him overnight. He will be arraigned on charges of felonious assault and having a weapon on school grounds as soon as Thursday morning.

I don't really see it as much different from a fist fight in school. Hell I've got a one-inch pocketknife on my keychain. Sure, I wouldn't use it to stab a fellow student, but it wasn't a serious wound and I honestly compare it to a fist fight in a classroom.

I just think it's interesting that he turned himself in immediately.
