I don't have a huge budget for this - but I'm looking for a code scanner.

I've seen prices range from $45 to $1500 and up - AutoZone to Mac. My budget's closer to the bottom end of that range - but I could conceivably spend as much as a couple hundred on one if there were compelling reasons.

Anyone have any recommendations?

Do you absolutely need it? I just go to the local auto parts store and rent it when I need to pull or clear codes. It's free.

Then I recommend a ScangaugeII, as it will to more than just read codes. You can get sensor readings and do a bunch of other nifty stuff. Instantaneous gas mileage, DTE, etc.

I have an autotap and I highly recommend it. Best money spent.
