What to look for ?

Mexicans, watch them interact in their natural habitat. Dont get too close or you'll frighten them away.

How about you find a better country to explorer, like Canada. Or check out Europe.

Even though Mexico wouldn't be the best place to live in, in does have many places that could be explored like the Mayan temples

Seriously though, what's in Canada?

Most of Mexico's newer main highways are four-lane roads with shoulders, and provide a safe, speedy, and efficient way to travel. Unlike the United States, nearly all of the main highways in Mexico require tolls. These tolls are expensive, so much so that most of Mexico's main highways are deserted because Mexican motorists cannot afford to use them. The main highways are patrolled by the "Green Angels" during daylight hours, which can assist you if you have a breakdown. If you breakdown on an isolated stretch of highway after dark, you may have to wait until the next morning to get assistance.

As a tourist, you should stick to the main highways as much as possible. Be prepared to drive defensively. Do not drive after dark if at all possible. Stay off the free "libre" roads in Mexico - robberies of tourists travelling along "libre" highways is common. Bandits along "libre" roads may pose as police or standed tourists. Do not leave valuables in your car, even if they are hidden. Be alert for road hazards, which may be marked with tin-cans filled with flaming oil, candles, rocks, or not at all. If you intend to cover a large distance, get an early start and estimate your driving time on the conservative side. Never pull on the side of the road to sleep.

If you use your common sense, and come prepared, Mexico can be a GREAT place to vacation and travel.

AAA has an excellent travel guide that they update regularly and provide free to their members. This guide contains excellent information for tourists vacationing and travelling within Mexico. It will provide you with the latest information about tolls, etc., so you know what to expect when you get there.

Good luck! :beer::D

get some body guards. I hate to be ignorant but the last time i heard, kidnapping for $ was a big thing over there with some drug dealers and some of the more rich people have SEVERAL body guards when they go around anywhere. But i could of just dreamed that up, i forgot where i read that. Sorry if im wrong.

I would avoid any of the areas below the southern border of the United States.

Word of caution. Don't break any traffic laws and stop at all RR crossings (many towns do not have crossing gates or even lights).
