Mexico or The South

I posted about going on a road trip to the southwest and got some good destinations. I know when I'm down there I will inevitably consider either going to the South because I've never been, or Mexico because it's Mexico.

From what I've seen the South looks either incredibly interesting (New Orleans) or incredibly boring (large open fields of nothing). The drive through Texas would be hell, and so if you live there or have travelled there, are there places in the south that would be worth going to see?

As for Mexico, what are some good cities to travel to? I've heard contrasting stories about the country, depending on where the person I asked was living.

I was at the border of Texas/Mexico last summer (Near South Padre Island) and it was worthwhile because it was the first time I was out of my own country.

It was semi-touristic...not as bad as places like Cancun, but there were still young Mexicans running around like to sell like 15 bags of peanuts for a quarter. =)

I've been to places like Las Vegas but never New Orleans. Must be nice to visit too. I think either way you go you can have fun, it just depends on what you want to do.... dance? learn about real culture? hook up with the locals??

The wife and I went to Texas to visit some friends once, long ago, and we thought we had fallen off the face of the earth. Every two bit town we stopped in reminded us of The Texas Chainsaw Massacres. :Q

Honestly, I don't know how anyone in their right mind could live in that bug infested crotch called a state. I have lived in shacks in 3rd world countries that I enjoyed more than Texas.

And there's no big cities in Texas. And there's no small towns in California either.

Make sure you drive through Toad Suck, Arkansas - you can visit Pickles Gap (yes they are real, and I've been to both and live nearby). Don't forget Goobertown, AR either.

There is a story behind Toad Suck. Years ago on the river there there use to be saloons old west style and the locals would watch in amusement as riverboat employees would stop there for R&R and would "suck" the beer down till they swelled up like "toads". . .

I'll save the Pickles Gap story for later. . .

Oooh, did I touch a sensitive nerve on a Texican? :D

I have no illusions about California, especially Southern CA. It is one huge sprawling metropolis from Oxnard to San Diego.

We do not, however, have DRY COUNTIES! ;) WTF is up with that BS! All the alcoholics have to drive 15 miles to the next county to get their frickin fix of booze!

I don't know how "far" southwest you are travelling, but Ensenada and Rosarito are good picks, and are within a few hours of San Diego.

You can have ALOT of fun in Mexico without blowing a ton of cash. Driving from San Diego, you'll find plenty of beaches, campgrounds, and night spots along the way.

Ensenada is a medium-sized port city on the west coast of Baja California Norte. You can rent boats, go horseback riding, check out the sights, or hang around downtown. Most shops downtown take U.S. credit cards, and you can purchase pre-paid (prepagado) SIM cards that will allow you to place/receive calls while you're on the run. T-Mobile subscribers can place/receive calls in Mexico using their own cell phones and U.S. phone numbers, but you can also pick up a cheap GSM phone on E-Bay and just get the prepaid SIM card in Mexico.

Good luck on your road trip!
