Mexico for spring break... who is going?

i got spring break next week, and right now looks like lake havasu is out of the question. So i was thinking of mexico for spring break.

I want to see mexico, how bad would it be for me to drive my california registered car, 2000 ford focus into mexico, and travel into baja mexico and see places. I want to do some research too, so it would help having a car.

I am an american citizen, so i dont need a visa, but i have never driven in mexico. I know i need mexican insurance, do you know how much that costs?

My biggest problem.. i dont speak spanish!

Nice knowing you bud...

Why is Lake Havasu out of the question?

just never ever drive at night....

you need a tourist visa, and you need to get a permit for importing your car into mexico (otherwise they can take it away and throw you in jail) these things can be gotten at your point of entry. i belive you need a birth certificate, driver's license, and a major credit card, passport might help but it's not necessary. also it might be easier to go to the mexican consulate (on the US side border town, and just talk to them about this process). hum, yeah the car has to be in your name also. this permit will allow you to drive without a problem in mexico. i would get insurance to drive in mexico. it's not expensive, but also you can get that in the border towns. you will see big signs for insurance as you reach the point of entry.

by the way:::: tourist visa is just a little paper you sign and lets you in to the country (when it's past the border town) it's not a real visa (no passport needed) but you need it when driving a car past 20 miles into the country (from the border)

Drive very carefully..not too fast and then MAYBE you won't get pulled over by a corrupt cop trying to get some money out of you.

I went to Ensenada a few years ago and there were plenty of decent cars parked around. Just make sure to get a decent hotel where they have a lighted parking lot. You might also want to consider just renting a car or buying that insurance they sell there as added security.

Ensenada was fun, pretty clean overall and plenty of bars/clubs to go to. I'd recommend going there for Spring Break.

the reason lake havasu is out of the question is because i dont have the boat yet? I dont want to put down 1000 dollars in deposit and another 400 for the day for a boat, if my friends bail out. I mean i can pimp women with the boat, but its gonna be boring.

Mexico, i can do by myself, see the place, i may not speak spanish, but can manage.. i shouldtn have a problem otherwise. Plus i can always do research down there.

You wont have any issues driving to TJ. If you plan on going futher south, the roads are decent but drive carefully. Also, bring lots of change because its a toll road and expect to pay about 1.50 every 10 miles or so.
