Not really, I'm chinese, and although I use "Asian" more, I don't think oriental is limited to just objects. My mom uses it a lot to differentiate between eastern asian and indian etc.

From what I know, it is an insult calling one person from a racial group of another race.

The same goes for calling a Chinese a Japanese, or calling a Japanese a Korean, or a Korean a Chinese.

It is the pride of each race/nationality/ethnicity that got hurt when you got called the wrong name.

I had an El Salvadorean baby sitter when my kids were growing up. The first month when she was with us...I thought she was Mexican. She was obviously tick off when I told her abt it.

She said that she considers Mexican like the bandidos of the past. Pancho Villa comes to mind...a villain to some and Robin Hood to the poor Mexicans. Did not ask to elaborate and was not curious enough to further delve abt it.

You do realize that this is a recent development, right? It never offended or had any negative conatations till someone got their panties in a wad for whatever reason and decided to b!tch about it. All of my oriental friends think this new rule is absurd also.
