Does that go for people who call themselves Irish American or Scottish American or anyoftheotherweirdmadeupthings that Americans like to call themselves?

Yes, yes and yes. It is downright silly to call yourself anything else other than American, particularly if you've never been to that country, experienced their culture.
I'm polish by heritage, but I certainly do not consider myself polish-american. Why would I? I don't have a clue about Poland or my ancestry and, quite honestly, I don't really care. I love America and consider myself fortunate every day that I was born an American.
