Yes, yes and yes. It is downright silly to call yourself anything else other than American, particularly if you've never been to that country, experienced their culture.

I'm polish by heritage, but I certainly do not consider myself polish-american. Why would I? I don't have a clue about Poland or my ancestry and, quite honestly, I don't really care. I love America and consider myself fortunate every day that I was born an American.

I'm not sure how true that is. I have gotten several loans through my bank and I haven't faced any obstacles. But, in my defense..I have near perfect credit.

Maybe that has something to do with how hard it is for minorities to get loans.

fwiw, "the star spangled banner" is set to music pirated (to use the modern lingo) from an old english drinking song, "to anacreon in heaven". and "my country, tis of thee" is pirated from britain's national anthem, "god save the queen".

Also, the Marines keep (bizarrely) ripping off Monty Python for presidential inaugurations*. I keep expecting a large animated foot to squash the President as soon as it ends.

My first thought when I saw it was one of curiosity and confusion...a young hispanic boy singing the Nat'l anthem while dressed in a traditional mexican outfit. Was he celebrating being mexican while at the same time celebrating america/being american? I have no problem with him being proud of both, but I wondered if he actually realized the depth of the statement he made, with the timing of when he made it, as well as the peripheral issues associated with it for many people in this country...or if he was just wearing an outfit he liked while doing something he liked to do, sing.

I think people that take it to the extreme and call him an illegal immigrant are really the ones the US would be better without.
