Mets sign Billy Wagner

that Ryan contract broke open that market

Mets are still trying to get Manny too, might not take that much to get him

They are becoming the crappy version of the Yankees. Load up on talent..but they don't know what it takes to actually gel as a team and win.

If the Mets sign Manny & get a decent 2B they better win the NL East (at least wild card) or goodbye Omar Minaya.

Thats alot of moolah but as NeoV mentioned that insane Ryan contract (47 million for 5 years..for a person with 1 year closer experience!) pretty much meant the Mets had to overpay. Mets probably had no choice as there was no one else available and they really needed a closer.

Now comes the catching situation... Molina or Hernandez??

Agreed.. I don't want the Mets to turn into the Yanks of today..spending like hell and winning nothing in return. In all honesty I just want to see a damn championship so if they have to overspend then so be it..its not my money.

There is no way in hell BJ Ryan should be getting paid more than Mariano Rivera.

EDIT: Apparently he's make 1.1 million less that Rivera. And Ryan closed for ONE season. Crazy.

The biggest problem the Mets have at the moment is that their pitching is setup to win "now" with Martinez & Glavine, both have a season or two left in the barring injury, but after that the odds of them pitching well go downhill in a hurry, Wagner is worth the big $'s but that 4th year worries me a bit... we'll see.

my sentiments also... I really hate the thought of simulating what the Yanks are known for but if that brings a championship to this side of NY... that's what it will take. The Yanks were recognized as the dynasty of the 90s because they won... so if the Mets win... they win.

Actually the Yanks won those championships before they went berzerk with the payroll. During the 90's dynasty they had their homegrown core (Jeter, Posada, Williams, Mendoza, Rivera..etc) and they surrounded them with good, complementary veterans (Tino, O'Neill, Brosius..etc). After they lost to the Diamondbacks in 2001, Georgie boy started his new philosophy of signing nothing but superstars and the Yanks have won nothing since adopting that way of thinking.

If the Mets have to spend like hell to bring in a championship then so be it. I was 10 when they won in 86 and I wasn't really a baseball fan back then...too busy with my Transformers and hanging out.

All the good relievers are slipping away from the yankees.

It would have been great if we could have gotten Wagner or Ryan to be a setup man for Mo.

why is there very little talk about 2b? That is an important position to improve.

also what about middle relief, that was horrid last year as well.

I guess first things first, a catcher, hopefully that will be decided soon, but i think it might take till the end of winter meetings

The Mets management thinks they can run a team as if it were a fantasy baseball team. It is so fun to watch Mets fans get excited about all the signings year after year only to crash and burn.

Q, the Mets were in the world series not that long ago, remember?

yeah but look at the team...i miss teams like that

Jay Peyton, Benny Agbayani, Derek Bell, Timo Perez as an outfield
Robin Ventura, Todd Zeile, Rey Ordonez, Edgardo Alfonzo

Mike Hampton, Al Leiter, Rick Reed, Bobby Jones, Glendon Rusch

yeah it was a good idea to fire a manager who could bring this team to the world series
