hmm...it wasn't boredom with hollow knight, it was frustration. thought I'd fire it up and play again and 5 minutes later I was angry, swearing, and wanting to throw the controller across the room.

so...how does that not remind you of Castlevania 1? and a good bit of Castlevania III....

On an unrelated subject does anyone else wish Konami would remake Symphony of the Night on Steam?
Square has redone most of the Final Fantasy games, or at least put them on Steam.
Resident Evil gets redone every six years.
Dragon Quest 8 got an Android release.

I'M JUST SAYIN!

very much so. I keep thinking it will happen, but it doesn't sound like it ever will. But then if it does, it would probably be a terrible port like all of those FF games, right?

I always loved the original Strider on NES. Never played the "updated" versions on Genesis, even, or whatever came after.

I want to say that it was the first game that used the "triangle jump" off of the wall mechanics.

not gonna lie I sort of forgot that it was a reboot of an older title, but it was still fun nonetheless.

Axiom Verge is still my favorite homage title though.

Hah, I don't remember having that much trouble in those games. Symphony of the night was my favorite though. Wish I could find something that matches that.

No one thinks of Castlevania 1 when they are takling metroidvania games. That started with SoTN and maybe III (I loved that game at the time).

On that note though, i've only ever played about an hour of SoTN. Just couldn't get into it at the time. Honestly, PSX graphics turned me off so much at the time it caused me to skip many games on the system.

I loved this game, right up until the end fight which was out of left field.

I admit I never made it to the final battle. I put it down for some reason or another, I think it was when I moved or maybe my last computer upgrade, and never picked it back up. But I was really enjoying it at the time. I figure I'll eventually pick it back up.

to be fair, I didn't know "metroidvania" was a term, but I guess I understood what he meant. Castlevania I and certainly II aren't really all that comparable, so it makes sense to think of SoTN and maybe Castlevania III as more like Super Metroid...and SoTN really wasn't hard.

I found Castlevania I classically "NES frustrating" as a platformer...those GOD DAMN MEDUSA HEADS!!! ...so why I was thinking that anger and controller-breaking rage should be hitting that target.

the first is the only one I've never beat (on nes/snes). I could never get passed the damn grim reaper boss. I don't think I could handle NES hard these days. I suppose Dark Souls is a call back to those days, but more complex.

Has anyone else played Strider?

It has some similarities to this genre but it's more of a hack and slash 2.5D platformer. I had fun with it for a few hours.
It didn't do much for me.

The Genesis version was more of a port of the arcade game, the NES version was fairly different. I played the NES version first, eventually rented a Genesis and played that version too. It was pretty cool for the time.

For all those who played UnEpic, you should check out Ghost 1.0. I helped beta test UnEpic and while I loved the game initially, Francisco insisted on cramming more and more references into the game which ultimately turned me off from the final product. I beat it a few times, but it's nowhere near as fun as it was before it was released on Steam.

You may be alone with that because the very term "Metroidvania" stems from both Metroid and Castlevania. When I hear the term, I refer back to the first games from both those series - it wouldn't make sense to start referencing games in the middle of the series.

The term Metroidvania did NOT come from being railroaded down a narrow path while on a timer.

It comes from games like Castlevania 2 and Symphony of the Night where you can do your own thing, go back and forth, collect what you want, and complete tasks at your leisure.

I ended up buying shantae: half-genie hero ultimate edition (or whatever has all the extras). It's more platformer than metroidvania but it's got good reviews and it's pretty fun. I like the graphics and music. Even though it looks cartoony and like a kid's game, it not without it's frustrations!

I would disagree. Castlevania 1 was a straight up level platformer. There was no Metroid likeness at all. The second one was basically RPG lite. The 3rd one had some elements, but still wasn't quite there. Super Castlevania went back to the first games style for the most part. It wasn't until SoTN the term really popped up. It came about because Castlevania evolved into something more like Metroid later on. It became such a popular game that nearly all the later normal 2D Castlevanias copied it.

Let me Wiki that for you:

Metroidvania is a subgenre of the action-adventure genre of video games. The term is a portmanteau of the game series Metroid and Castlevania. Metroidvania games use game design and mechanics that are similar to games from these two series. Specifically, the term derives from the Castlevania title Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, which is generally considered to contain certain aspects of gameplay comparable to that of the Metroid series of games.

I just bought Hollow Knight the other day, during the Steam sale, although I'm not typically into platformers or metroidvania-style games. I was hesitant about the purchase, and I largely bought it because of the great reviews as well as I needed to spend $10 on something to use a coupon there. Well... I've sunk over 36 hours into it already in just a few days (I'm on vacation). Safe to say there are zero regrets about my purchase. It's super challenging, has very satisfying gameplay, and an interesting story, if not a little incoherent/hard to follow (at least to me anyway). Highly, highly recommended. It has a great sense of progression, fun exploration, and really good music as well. Also, seems to have quite a long play length, as I still seem to have quite a bit more game left at 36 hours in. Definitely worth checking out since you're looking for a game of this style.

A friend gifted me Dungreed yesterday. It's a lot like Rogue Legacy but with a lot more weapon variety. Really really fun.

Is Bloodstained curse of the moon out yet? it's basically Castlevania. There are also Castlevania fan made games as well using the OpenBOR engine. You can check out one called Haunted Castle which is the original arcade version before it was called Castlevania, use MAME to play it.
Curse of the Moon came out in May. Ritual of the Night is the one still in development.
