Director John Woo has optioned Nintendo's Metroid for the big screen. Woo is also developing three original titles at his Tiger Hill video game studio using Hollywood talent. Metroid has appeared in various incarnations since its introduction in 1986. The movie will center on the origins of the game's female protagonist and relate her adventures battling the life-sucking Metroids and their Mother Brain. Nintendo will unveil Metroid Prime 2 during a news conference at the E3 expo in Los Angeles on May 11. The first Metroid product turned up on the Nintendo Entertainment System. Nintendo relaunched the franchise with the release of Metroid Prime in November 2002 on its GameCube platform. Reuters says Tiger Hill is overseeing development of three original games - the first of which will ship in late 2005. Woo will direct the games' cinematics and oversee other aspects of the production. Tiger Hill has a first-look deal with Sega and is developing a game for the publisher but also is making at least one additional title for another publisher. Details on two of the projects are expected to be unveiled at E3.
