Lock + sideways + jump = strafe, you are correct.

I liked the control scheme of MP on the GC more than MP3 on the Wii, but maybe that's just me.

I started MP3 last night--ah it's like sliding into a nice hot bath after being lost in a snow storm. 🙂

I wish they would release a 2D metroid on the console again

Super Metroid is still the best in my book

I have not played MP3 though

I would ABSOLUTELY LOVE new HD 2D sequels/reboots of all my favorite old platformers. Metroid, Contra, Ninja Gaiden, Mario, etc. I'd be in Nostalgia Heaven.

I never played 2 or 3, but 1 was absolutely fantastic. One of my all time favorite games.

Pick up the Trilogy and replay the 1st one and move on to the excellent 3rd one.

Was it really just the dark world that turned you off on 2 so much?

Mostly, yes. It's so unbecoming of what I expect out of a Metroid experience that I can't even play it for anything longer that 15 minutes. I can't understand why someone thought this was a good idea in a Metroid game. It does nothing to enourage me to play more of it, or stick around in it's world. Every time I try to play it, it turns out to be akward, frustrating and ultimately--and most importantly--not fun.

Perhaps the difference in our experience comes a bit from the fact that you jumped straight into mp2 after having been a fully powered up samus at the end of mp1, free to go wheneve or wherever. I could see how going from
that to a world that will kill you in seconds to be a bit off putting. It had been a year or two for me between them, and I've always expected to be restricted at the beginning of a Metroid game.

And come to think of it, the first area, agon wastes, is probably the least interesting level in the entire series. My fondest memories of mp2 do come from the latter half. The last level, the sanctuary fortress, is easily my favorite in the entire series. By the time you get to that point, the dark world has long ceased to do you any damage.

ah well, I guess to each their own, it just seems hard for me to believe anyone who loved the 1st and 3rd could so hate the 2nd.

I have yet to play Metroid Prime 2, but I just finished the first one on the Metroid Prime Trilogy before I got Mass Effect 2. I've heard mixed reviews about it, so I will at least try it to see if I enjoy it.

Yes, MP1 is a stunningly good game in my opinion, but am interested in your thoughts on MP2.

I assume, because you're only now playing MP1, that you're not a huge Metroid fan?

Are you referring to me? If so, I own the original version of Metroid Prime for the GameCube (not the Greatest Hits version or the later version where they fixed much of the sequence breaking). This time recently is about the sixth time I've beaten the game over the years.

My thoughts on Metroid Prime 2 are that I've not played it yet, and I've heard mixed reviews about it, so I am skeptical. I will still try it though.

I love this threads discussion. 🙂

I was wondering from where the necro came .. and unfortunately, I still haven't had the spare cash to pick up a Wii just to play the trilogy. 🙁 A bummer, too, I really want to play 2 and 3 after the lovefest I had with 1 on my roommate's GC. 😛

Well, TheVrolok, the collectors edition is no longer being manufactured apparently so it's going to be scarce. 🙁
